I just time traveled in from 2004. Explain to me in straightforward non-bullshit terms why they don't make arena shooters anymore.

This thread has been made already thousands of times since 2004, I recommend checking the archives.

1. Fun multiplayer game loops aren't enough anymore. Multiplayer vidya is played primarily for progression mechanics, arena shooters can't offer that.

2. Most gaming audiences are found on mobile and consoles. Developing economically means you need to go cross-platform. This is the same reason why RTS died.

3. We've come a long way in terms of technology and design since 2004. You can find some arena DNA in games like The Finals, but there's all sorts of additional fun shit in there that the arena shooters of old would've made a deal with satan for to have.

they still do kind of, but nobody plays them
there's even a Tribes sequel that got zero advertising and is still in paid early access with nobody playing it

Videogames that allow people to create dedicated servers and people that play them are now considered security risks for stochastic terrorism.

I said straightforward and non-bullshit. "That's just not how things are anymore!" and "it's current year!" are not arguments. Meanwhile you're talking like there's objective progression when there really isn't, it's not like we went from the Ford Model T to the Porsche 911 and Arena Shooters are something we just "can't go back to" - it's all just trends and temporary gimmicks that are pretty much universally reviled but so normalized that we stopped balking at them.

been wondering the same, i guess it has to do with the formula and how new shooters nowadays rely on keeping players addicted through endless content release, like modes, skins, events, etc because if they don't someone else will and they are going to lose players and revenue but i might be wrong since a lot of people still play cs/tf2/etc and they only have skins.

Not him, but have some self-awareness dude. The AFPS Genre was also a temporary trend, only lasting from QuakeWorld (no, not going to count DWANGO DOOM) to UT2004, and never really getting popular ever again after that--unless you wanna count Halo. It lasted shorter than the progression mechanics he mentioned, which have been taking over the industry and holding it in a chokehold since around 2011.

Halo perfected the concept with Halo 3 and gave community tools everyone was able to use. Not as in depth as UT2004 but still very good especially for the average normalfag. People have tried to make new AFPS games but they're usually Quake clones that either A) have worse hitreg than Quake 3 (which awas already shit) and/or B) are complete clones of Quake 3 which leads to players either bitching that it's a clone or they bitch about the small differences they don't like because "NOT MUH QUACK" and they die.

There's room to improve but unfortunately nobody wants to innovate and produce quality. Should also be of note that the free flow of ideas and communication in video games is dead which prevents concepts being discussed which created popular mods/games. You can't even call someone a nigger or faggot or niggerfaggot anymore without 1 million trannies kicking you or outright banning you.

If you count it as an AFPS, TF2 is decently alive still though it has become the tranny/furfag game.

Sounds to me like you've made your mind up before making your thread, anon, because the alternative would be that you have a serious problem with your reading comprehension. You didn't even try to understand the simple points being made and ran off with your own ideas instead. Don't make a thread next time if all you want is people patting you on the back.

Describing the gaming landscape during UT and Q3 is like describing a puddle, compared to what now is an ocean. There are much bigger fish to compete with, cross-platform fish, fish with 500 unlockables, fish with season passes and content updates. It's not "objective progression" it's objectively retaining peoples' attention better. Yes, arena shoots is something we can't go back to. It's not your retarded car comparison either, it's more like going back to charcoal and drawing on cave walls when we visual arts have all these other options.
