Over the originals as in as a replacement? No. But FR/LG are still good and different enough to warrant an occasional playthrough, especially right after RBY to revisit the places with higher fidelity graphics and do the post game.

In gen 1, trainer AI choses moves entirely based on type effectiveness. Meaning, for example, if you have a poison type out, it's going to choose agility over and over again because it thinks it's super effective. Though, you are indeed expected to just run back to a Pokemon Center to refill.

Psychic is broken in gen1 because the devs accidentally made it immune to ghost type instead of 2x weak and it's other weakness is bug type but there are few trainers in the game with strong bug type moves practice doesn't matter.

You just catch pokemon in the wild, and you can catch all pokemon in gen 1, there's still trainer and gym and elite four battles. Wild battles are not enjoyable in standard Pokemon, there I said it.

I threw my copy of LeafGreen away as a young zoomer. I'd already played through every version of Gen 1 at that point, seemed like a complete rip-off to me to release it again.

The multiplayer is a lot more fun. The addition of a run button is also very welcome.
I also think these games had the nicest-looking Pokedex out of any of them, as inconsequential as that might sound. Sevii Islands were kinda lame, and it would have been nice to retain some of the stuff added in Yellow, but otherwise I don't really have any complaints about these games.

I look back on these as quintessential Pokemon games. I would go as far to recommend them to someone who only wanted to play one game in the series.

Hyper Beam skipping the recharge if you get a kill with it is a good thing and how it should have always worked. Gen 1 is the only time where it was ever worth using.
