just cranking up the framerate without any heed to the weighing of movement keyframes is going to look bad like this. 120fps oot could look be made to look like a straight improvement on the og but you'd need to make changes to add a bit more bias to certain points in the animations.

Has anyone done an efficiency deep dive on the OoT and MM decomps? Kinda like what Kaze Emanuar does with SM64? I kind of want to know how far you can push the frame rate on original hardware.
Anonymous No.723889401 [Report] >>723889492 >>723890573
KINO
Screen resolution and framerate should ALWAYS be as high as physically possible. No fucking detriment whatsoever to the original art direction, as a matter of fact it allows it to shine even more than the original hardware ever allowed, and we can appreciate the game much more.
Raising stuff like texture resolution (AI upscaling like most remasters like to do) or model polygon count, or adding post processing filters and whatever else is what makes something soulless. Nightdive are frauds.
The other end of this, with new trend of some indie games only allowing a max res of 640x480 is utterly baffling to me too. It adds absolutely nothing to the "retro" aesthetic.

I love PC gaming these days, with emulation and recomps/decomps.
OOT
MM
Mario 64
Jak 1+2(3 eventually)
Star Fox 64
Almost every emulatable game at 60 or 120fps(or higher if you slightly boost game render speed which makes games more fun AND smoother). Like this year I played Gravity Rush at 120fps and it was glorious. Some PS2 games look great at that frame rate too, and Zelda games at 60fps are nice.

System Shock Enhanced, Blood Fresh Supply and Strife Veteran were ok, the changes are not that intrusive.
But looking at what they did to Dark Forces, Turok 3, or any of their recent remasters, made me puke my eyes out through my ass.
A source port, emulator or a patch from pcgamingwiki is still the definitive way to play most games that got the remaster treatment

Honestly depends on the camera system the game uses. If you told me you still can't see the difference instantly in a first person game, I simply wouldn't believe you.
Games where the camera is usually stable and stationary like DMC3 or other action games, then all the movement on screen is in the character animations and aren't as noticeable unless you play that game a lot and pay close attention to the small details.

Nintendo's goal was to ship out blockbuster games on their own platform with a certain level of quality. I highly doubt they were maximising performance gains when developing MM, a game arguably released in the latter end of the N64's lifecycle. It still had 20fps, like OoT. Some crazy autists managed to get an RE2 port working on it via unconventional means.

they're 24 because we're used to it, it was only a cost cutting measure to begin with.
yes, interpolation in movies is bad. but hobbit/avatar is filmed with a high frame rate, so there's no artifacting

it makes for*
But don't get me wrong, for video games-new ones-it's valid, but watching The Wizard of Oz (1939) higher than 23.97 (as close as video can get to 24) frames looks doofy.

I appreciate the education there anon. Interesting.

in a perfect world we would have increased frame rates a long while ago, it's just nicer for the eyes. action scenes look so much better at high frame rates, you literally see more things going on. but the shitty interpolation that modern tvs do is not the solution

I thought so too but a few months ago I installed a new graphics card and went to play TF2 and thought to myself "wow this game should not stutter this badly on this card"
long story short windows was at 60hz

movies look fucking bad above 24fps
you are WRONG

24 fps hides the fact they can't act

I find myself agreeing with you, but for previously existing material I'm just set in my ways and want to watch Flash Gordon (1980) as it was exactly, but video games and new movies and shows, sure I'm all in. I tried it with sports, but again, set in my ways.
My TV has an option to turn on or off and I use it sometimes.

agree, i never turn interpolation on. it just can't do it properly (yet)

Once that problem is solved, it'll be a boon for damaged films and maybe some video games too, who knows.

The cold reality is that in games the highest refresh rates give you more time to react. Going from sub 60 to over 120 literally doubles your time to react to the images you see.
This is just reality. Thats the reason smooth brans goon over a billion fps.
The funny part is they use upscaling garbage like DLSS and frame gen to get it, which fucking ruins any benefit youd gain buy making the image you see inaccurate because its stretched like your whore sisters gash at a frat party and every other frame you see is copy/pasted fake insert not displaying the image you need to see
TLDR: stay mad poor fags

does 8ms really give you that much of an advantage though, considering most people have reflexes between 150-250ms?

yes
it's not about reaction times it's about the FEELING

the more information you have the more saturated your brain becomes

the more saturated your brain is the more immersed and invested and informed you are about the QUEST

Been playing KHFM with a 60 fps patch on NetherSX2 and RA works fine with it enabled.

8ms is tons of time to guys like me. It's the difference between beating "Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!" or not.
