This is going to sound stupid, but I tried VR a few times in the past, and I really loved the feeling of feeling like you are somewhere else for a moment.

I'm not a gamer. Don't play videogames and don't have a gaming pc. But I want to have that at home. I don't even know what to do with it or what to play, but like I said, the feeling of just putting it on and feeling like you are somewhere else was really interesting, and I think if I had that at home, it would help me recharge after a day around normies.

What do I buy that is not too expensive for something I won't use that much and doesn't need a gaming computer or anything? And is there anything you can do with it that won't get old fast?

If you don't want to spend much and don't have a PC, get something standalone (Quest for example)

If you do decide to get a Quest, take a look at extra peripheries like one of those Kiwi head straps
The default Quest headstrap is passable, but I would really recommend buying something better, changing them out is a simple process you can look up
Other than that, a battery pack, because if you don't have a PC for it, the headset CAN get hotter during some games and at most give you 2-3 hours of game time
Now, if you just want to unwind after work, 2-3 hours are pretty much what you're looking for in battery life, so think on that choice

For the pc you're looking at like 2k$. With the bulk of your ability to change the budget is around a gpu. Don't go to cheap. Yes you could get by with a 1080 but you shouldn't go less than anything with dlss. Plus if its not for gaming there's a high possibility you will be doing ai 2d to 3d conversions in which case the better gpu you get, the less time you'll spend converting (and upscaling).

Quest 3 (not 3s) is probably the only reql casual option especially if you want the color passthrough. But its main difference is the lenses

As far as pricing goes it would be easier if you just say what your budget is. Then anons can recommend the best price point on second hand market, which will be the cheapest option. For stand alones Quest is going to be pretty much your only option

well i dont have a lot of money to spend because i have to pay a very high rent and try to save up. and this is not a priority for me. but other than that i dont have a budget in mind because i dont know how much it's supposed to cost. but if it's for example 2k, or even over 1k, for something decent, i dont think i'll bother unfortunately

Unfortunately you will probably be underwhelmed without a pc. Since its environments you're mostly wanting, vrchat is the best place for that, and the standalone locations are trash compared to the pc ones. And vrchat is probably the hardest program to run on a pc (it's world based as far as how much compute you need). And exception is if you only play on like watching movies and stuff in a much smaller handful of environments using a standalone media player like moonvr

Just get a quest, it does what a hyper casual wants out of it, and I don't mean "hyper casual" as an insult, I'd get one if I were in your shoes.

or maybe i'll actually spend more get a better pc. because if the graphics will suck and i'll be underwhelmed in terms of how i expect it to be, then it would be pointless

Go full Valvefag and get an Index right before they put out the steam frame, you’ll love HL Alyx

the full kit / pair of controllers are currently out of stock but you can still buy all the parts separately.

Just get a Quest 3. PCVR is dead anyways so anyone telling you to get an index is coping hard.

t. index owner.

Quest 3 is the bare minimum but it's already aging and it's stuck on Meta's platform. Valve's next headset will probably be standalone and have a better processor on top of getting access to SteamVR games, basically standalone PCVR, giving you a lot more options. Even if you aren't planning on gaming, more power and better displays will always be better for VR. That said, it's piss easy to pirate VR games on either standalone Quest or on PC, but I don't know how easy it will be on a standalone Valve headset. You need a PC for the godlike porn stuff.
>tl;dr wait for valve to announce their next headset then decide after comparing specs with quest 3

"Made for VR" is dead. Vr mods beat out even AAA releases. The the new guy, look up videos on UEVR (actual game streams not tutorials on it) Most of the setup is just download a config file and not having to mess with the windows they might show in the streams (cause they like testing stuff) but those are the best games to play on pc in VR

Index is out dated. I do not recommend other than for the controllers and base stations to swap the headset with a big screen beyond (can't be used) or a meganx

Like if I do a quick youtube search by date, yiugotcoldyogurt has a new soubke dragon revive video, think it came out today. (Thus guy you want to skip the first 20/30 mins usually as hes building profiles from scratch, usually you would just download the setting from the flat2vr discord and not need to fiddle with them yourself)

Howard's legacy
Keeper (dunno wtf it is but looks visually interesting)

even with a quest 3 99% of the time I use it with quest link to tether it to PCVR. If you can't find anything to do with a gaming pc hooked up to the goggles that is purely a (you) problem

just get a third party quality cable to make sure you dont get scammed by the overpriced meta version

I'm fairly certain its standalone devs that are trying to push the pcvr is dead meme. Because they always try to say mods dont count because you can't pick up a bunch of random litter off the ground

Jannies only allow negative vr threads. That's why when they go positive they get pruned instead of archieved
