And ideally much like sudoku the difficulty will be adjustable; I know bosses will likely have bigger boards but shouldn't be too hard to modify the number of obstacles on the board itself based on difficulty.

Whenever I think of "adaptive difficulty", my mind immediately thinks of the rank system in certain shmups. But I doubt any dev would go for the whole "game gets progressively more difficult the longer you're alive" type of difficulty.
