I played games mainly for gameplay and fun as a kid. As a tee and especially late teen, I started to branch out of the same 5 or so shitty multiplayer games to experience more. And the games I found myself enjoying were more-so artistic, had interesting stories, characters, music etc. Basically, I was playing for things OTHER THAN gameplay.
Games don't suck now because they aren't gameplay focused. Games suck because they're a product of monetary consumption and everything now equates around that, and the industry both east and west is filled with garbage.

It feels like a lot of people just memory hole how ubiquitous shitty 00s action platformers that made up like 80% of the landscape were.

But these kinds of discussion are messy because the AA scene is still knitting itself back together after being choked to death other the end of 7th and 8th gen and the indie scene is not ready to move to 6th gen level games yet so the context is lacking.
