i don't think it was ever like that? i mean, it depends greatly on the combat encounter. generally for example high level warlocks will cast shit like hunger of hadar or sometimes you'll run into a special encounter like balthazaar casting cloudkill but i don't think most encounters are about getting mass CC'd by casters
or did you mean in comparison to BG1/2? because yeah mage combat autism is my least favourite thing about those games. granted base BG1/2 AI is retarded so you don't usually run into issues beyond the early game unless you get unlucky or you're playing with a mod that fixes the AI
