Games and media were in fact better "back in the day" and the gaming industry now spends significant amount of times just remastering and remaking shit because the people working in it are unable to produce anything good or think ahead for more than one fiscal year.
And if it's not that, they immediately just chase the latest trend someone else uncovered for them, typically burning hundreds of millions in the process.

I think it's because games as a medium haven't changed in well over a decade. The last big shift was the jump to 3D, and once developers (more or less) understood how to work in 3D environments they've been making the same handful of games over and over again. I don’t know how anyone could have any preference for the “main” girl in Kip’s stories when they’re all just the same character but palette swapped. Any distinguishing personality they might have is eaten along with everything else once they start ballooning up and then they become just a dumb inflation character. The babysitter comic was probably the one time that didn’t happen, and it’s because it was too short for the characters to degrade.

The process through which their demeanour is overwritten by being complete fat fucks is part of it for me. Kip initially came off as a shy, soft-spoken, insecure girl, and Sydney as a bit of a me-first bitch, but through the events of their respective comics they become slaves to desire and to their guts, and some hidden traits even start showing up because of this. Kip becomes a hell of a lot more brazen and Sydney grows meek and even submissive when pushed.
Now I'm not going to say Kip is a master writer because it wouldn't be further from the truth, but one's gotta give credit where its due. There's a reason the main girls are liked other than because of how damn fat they get.

Ballooning budgets for the mainstream mean everything has been homogenized and focus tested; control schemes and genre conventions have become standardized.
Games moved towards always-online-services that get played forever rather than making new ones. The average gamer today plays only 2 or 3 games that they've sunk multiple years and thousands of dollars into and so have their friends.

I think the indie scene is thriving, but if you're looking towards a "culture", it's always going to be dictated by the most popular and visible AAA games.

Nah, the real culture is the period before it becomes mainstream, then its dead already. We used to have good demons souls threads here, tarkov threads, even the mods that became pubg etc. Soulslikes and BRs are devoid of culture now, I think extraction ganes still have some unrealised potential though desu.
