Okami's combat I liked but I never saw any reason to use brushstrokes in fights outside of the specific gimmick enemies like blooming the flower lizards or in the dedicated finisher for demon fangs like Power Slashing the goblins

I like Bayonetta but honestly I don't think it really holds a candle to DMC3. Though I always thought it was funny Luka as a character is so visually reminiscent of Capcom's later Dante, while Kamiya himself has some weird chip on his shoulder regarding later DMC games and doesn't seem to regard any of them past the first as canon, and while Bayonetta's own visual design and cutscene choreography is so referential to DMC3 and DMC4 (since it was the same choreographers doing work iirc).

Dante can go die in a ditch with his 99 moves i will never use because i don't like his game enough to replay it multiple times on different difficulties. I got a lot of use out of the inferno attack you get from a sidequest where you draw the infinity symbol, but yeah most of my brush attacks were done on reaction to something like on the guitar bozos blocking or needing to knock a flying fucker down. and of course getting the brushstroke kills for demon fangs

DMCV was fine, it wasn't amazing but it was still pretty alright. I think V would've been a cool idea in another game, his playstyle doesn't fit well in DMC but I didn't hate the idea of an action game character where you're a puppet master and the implementation while not perfect felt pretty good. Just needed to be in like, Chaos Legion 2 or a new IP instead.

Janky and eclectic games are often given benefit of the doubt, but there aren't enough excuses in the sea for games made by experienced people repeating their fumbles. And I'm not even talking about Space Harrier, but the seeming assumption that his games aren't just pulpy action flicks. Which leads into countless gimmicks and incentives that don't so much "break up the pace" as bring it to a screeching halt.

Kamiya has always been based. Every single game he's directed is great.
