I don't agree with immediately dropping a game (or genre of game) simply because the barrier of entry is sky-high. However, fighting games are impenetrable unless you've played them since childhood or are a NEET who can contribute 6+ hours daily to practice.
Case in point, Quake is much more accessible for a noob because even though I'll lose the duel 0-20, at least I'll have opportunities to practice movement and even land a few rails here and there, slowly picking up the skills required to be a competent player.
On the other hand, fighting games are gatekeeped by having to commit complicated button combos in order for the character to even control properly. The final nail in the coffin is the fact that the opponent will put you into 20 second long combo strings essentially disabling your controller while you lose 40% of you healthbar. At least in Quake I can fight back until the moment my character dies.
