Why doesn't Earthbound have a run button?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulBYfJ4M5ks LMAO AT THIS FUCKING FAGGOT

>Game gives you a bike
>Shortly thereafter, Paula joins your party, making the bike useless

BRAVA EARTHBOUND.

BRAVA

And what the fuck was the point of the condiment system?

>Oh man, waste a slot to carry a packet of salt instead of just having another bag of dragonite!

When I think about it, this game actually kind of does suck. For an RPG, it has no replay value to speak of

>99% linear with no side quests
>No party organization to give certain characters priority over others
>No unique equipment builds that reward smarter thinking, not harder thinking
>No way to truly test your characters skills with the lack of a new game+ feature

Would have been nice to have, but this is give or take:
>Alternate party members
>Alternate endings
>Monster/boss arena

At the end of the day, it's still a VIDEO GAME and not an "interactive experience". You don't cut Gone Home any slack(the hipsters that love Earthbound LOVE Gone Home as well), neither should you with Earthbound.

Reminder Undertale is for faggots (and don't give me that MUH MOTHER 3, I just played it and it still has a lot of the same problems as EB)

>When I think about it, this game actually kind of does suck.
It aged really fucking bad, that's for sure. But that's not exclusive to Earthbound. Plenty of "classic" JRPGs are kinda dogshit if you play them today. Chrono Trigger has aged like shit too, but I'd argue better than Earthbound. All such games have essentially the same core gameplay loop with one or two minor quirks thrown on top. It's just not fun or exciting.
>For an RPG, it has no replay value to speak of
It's rare for an RPG to have replay value. The core gameplay loop would need to be very good. So I don't hold it against Earthbound specifically, since it's something that the genre isn't built around. Even a game like The Witcher 3 doesn't have much replay value.
>You don't cut Gone Home any slack
I cut it some slack. It's good at what it attempts to do. That's the best thing I can say about it, as the experience of playing it I found to be quite miserable, which almost certainly wasn't the devs' intention. But maybe there was some value in that misery, it's hard to say.
>Reminder Undertale is for faggots
Undertale is a fantastic game that outdoes the Mother games. It has a great core gamplay loop, it has great writing, it has great pacing, it is packed to the gills with small changes in the world depending on what you do in the game, and the different main gameplay paths offer vastly different experiences. The story is not only emotionally potent, but also gives you something to ponder about. Doing both is rare in video game writing.
>and don't give me that MUH MOTHER 3
Mother 3 I'd argue has aged much better than Earthbound. The pacing is quicker, it's shorter, and the writing is much much better. The story is one of the most emotionally potent ones that "classic" JRPGs have to offer. Yeah, the core gameplay loop also isn't great, but at least the progression moves quicker and it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Undertale is not the same at all as Earthbound. The similarities are superficial.

>What's aged about it?
The core gameplay loop is really boring. All the characters are boring anime tropes. The story didn't move me in any way.
>So does EB you disgusting Underfaggot.
I will give Earthbound some credit. It has moments here and there that are brilliant. Like whenever you get to a sanctuary, the music, the visuals, and the flavor text create quite a transcendent sensation. And the resolution to the final boss fight is quite moving, which is surprising, considering that when I played it for the first time I wasn't at all invested in the story or the boring one-note characters. It also has phenomenal music. I also love the creativity on display, with the different set pieces, enemy designs, and areas. But my main criticisms still stand. The core gameplay loop sucks. The story is pretty boring overall save for a few moments of brilliance here and there. It's way too long and really drags on. It aged like shit.
