Why is video game writing so fucking bad?
It’s been proven that good writing can carry a game
take it from good to great. Just look at The Witcher, KCD or Bully.
There are probably hundreds of great writers out there who could craft better dialogue and characters, but nope we keep getting the same slop.

Unless a game is entirely focused on narrative (and even then, it can still be bad),
95% of the time the writing is bland and forgettable, like background noise.
“Good guy, please help us! Bandits took my daughter!”
That’s the level we’re stuck with.

Or worse, we get that cringe, millennial-style “quirky” writing
Don’t Nod games's Tumblr tier dialogue that somehow still sounds more entertaining than most of what’s out there.

And it’s not even about being woke.
Movies are woke too, but we still get a well written one every now and then. With games? nah

if a game is carried by writing it's not a game, since you can enjoy it's best content without even playing it by watching an lp or all the cutscenes on youtube.

I think good or great writing can turn a 7 or 8 into a 9 or even a 10 for some people.
Realistically, you can only have so much depth and gameplay variety.
But when the narrative is strong and the characters feel real, it adds a lot more weight to everything.

That’s why GTA IV feels so much more engaging than V
the characters and stakes feel real.
The bank robbery feels gritty and intense instead of stupid and silly.

good writers don't get wasted on video games

Writers don't get paid shit anywhere. What makes you think they'll come to a manchild hobby and shit out a whole novel for arrested developed 30 year olds? They'll do the bare minimum by default.
