Kirby seems to be Nintendo's experimental series actually. When they first tried Free To Play with in game currency style monetization they did it with Kirby. Nintendo's "craft material" sub-genre including a lot of Kirby with claymation and yarn. There's also Mass Attack and Tilt and Tumble and a dozen or so other things like that. And Kirby's Air Ride is a thing that's coming back now too.

I think Kirby is always well liked, it just hasn't been pushed as a big budget headlining system selling series or anything.

As someone that's put about 120 hours into the full game, the demo doesn't really do it justice. Things to know about it:
>there's better music in the full game, especially lap 3 music.
>flying controls aren't as bad when you realize you can charge a drift up and down as well as side to side, and switch directions in midair in any direction that way.
>the CrossWorlds mechanic grows on you since it means no two runs of a track feel the same, and you unlock the ability to get sent to a different main track rather than a CrossWorld after you beat all the cups if you ever get sick of the 15.
>building your kart doesn't really matter that much if you don't care about the meta, it's mostly cosmetic. Gadgets matter way more and there's 70 to mix and match to make something you're comfortable with.
>settings have options for a more dynamic race camera so the game feels faster, plus steering sensitivity so turning doesn't feel as stiff.
>unironically let go of the accelerator in some sections to take turns tighter.
I've also seen some people say their hands hurt after playing for a while, but as someone who's played a bunch of the previous Sonic racers, I felt more comfortable with the accelerator on the trigger button which is an option.
If none of that sells you on the game I fully understand, but if it does and the price tag is just too steep, I'd say wait for a sale (especially since this is getting constantly updated with new characters over the next year), but this is genuinely a great racing game and I can't wait to play more with friends.

I'll be honest, I don't get why people buy games designed from the ground up to be played with multiple people and then whine about the lack of single player content. Smash Bros, Mario Kart, whatever, the single player stuff only needs to be good enough to give people an intro to the game and maybe some score attack type stuff but i'd much rather devtime go into putting as much multiplayer shit as possible that I'll actually use and see the entire time I'm playing the game rather than a boring story mode I'll play exactly one time.
This game has single and multiplayer stuff which is nice, but I refuse to believe anyone would go out of their way to buy a game like this and go "I want a robust single player experience."

Sometimes I want to play the game by myself with a fun gimmick attached to it, man. I don't think a game of this quality should just be tied to an online/local experience. So when I'm sick of constantly crashing matches or just the meta in general, I can play the game in other ways. Is wanting replayability without depending on the player count really that understandable?

So you'd do time trials or whatever, I still don't think that justifies wanting a whole story mode, especially when everyone is just racing, what exactly are people looking for when they want a plot in a racer, even. Kirby gets away with it because its lore is wacky magic bullshit, (and even then i doubt there will be anything actually worth writing about past pretty cutscenes) but I mean more in line with games like Sonic or Mario Kart.

Even though I agree with you, I do wish Sonic had a mission mode. Every other Sonic racing game had one in some capacity, even the predecessor through a story mode (though I could do without the story mode since the presentation was ass)

CrossWorlds does this in GP and Race Park. You have the rival system and Race Park lets you race with different rulesets.

I'm still not sure if it's gonna be quite worth a full $70, but I've been convinced enough to buy it day one.

Persolly for mr, if you're gonna charge 70 dollars for a racing game, you have to do some different stuff other than just racing to be the fastest. Like look at Smash. The main gameplay is beating the shit out of each other, yet you still have people raving for Target Smash. Because it's something significantly different yet fun from the usual gameplay. If it was yet another special smash against NPCS, it wouldn't be regarded as much. It's also why SSE>WOL, because you aren't just fighting other characters on the roster. It's different enough and it's cool. It doesn't hurt, and implies the devs have an extended vision other than just the genre the game is in.
We have a roguelite mode in air riders now,too.
