The original had a note Leon can find that states an ambush is planned in the barn. So when Leon enters, he tells Ashley to wait outside. Simple and logical. In the demake, Ashley comes in for some reason and Leon has to tell her to leave, because she is too stupid to figure out it is dangerous I suppose.
This puts an awkward moment in where Mendez is apparently just standing stock still off-camera while Leon shouts at Ashley and she awkwardly shuffles away. Sloppy direction. Another goofy change is how Leon slowly rolls the barrel towards Mendez. In the original he cleverly baited an attack, then dodged out of the way. In the demake, he announces his intention to use the barrel, pauses to shout at Ashley, then slowly kicks it towards Mendez, who is slowly waddling forward like a crippled old man. And this is supposed to be a fearsome, intimidating opponent?
Very, very embarrassing writing and direction. RE4 is no masterpiece of storytelling but it follows the basics, while the demake fails to grasp concepts like "characters still exist off-camera". It feels like children made it.
