Trails is unironically my favorite videogame series and I like Rean, but I have to agree that his arc was not very good, to put it mildly. CS3 and 4 were kinda awful.

The bloat gets insane, I will do my best to explain without major spoilers. They tried to make it similar to persona with really half baked bonding in high school. There are too many characters in the party CS1 with an ending total of 12 going all the way up to 52 in Reverie (this is an ensemble cast to be fair but half the party is from CS). There are a few likeable characters but so many are just nothing. The Sky games really establish a baseline for how competent your enemies are and they feel very threatening. CS power scaling goes all over the place and these people who are supposed to be comparable or outright stronger than the older villains just sandbag over and over to the party for plot convenience at one point there's a side quest with a character from the enemy faction who antagonizes a classmate (mind you they have killed 100s of people prior to this) and Rean just talk no jutsus them into having a whacky swimming competition. The plot is absolutely horrendous and spirals out in way too many directions with one of the worst payoffs I have ever witnessed. Then they try to write the worst twists imaginable which you will be able to guess not based on plot points but because the story has become so shit you can guess based on how bad the plot has become. Unfortunately a lot of this continues on in Kuro. If you're planning on going through all the games to join us all on the sunk cost ship, do yourself a favor and take time between CS games because they will burn you out.
