So what's up with Vanillaware refusing to do PC ports?
Is there legal issues or just a result of oldschool Japanese dev spite?

This
It took Sega acquiring ATLUS to see the dollar signs for porting shit, and even then it took several YEARS since P4G got ported for PC ports on release to be the standard
It took DaS for Bamco to even get an INKLING to start having PC ports common place for anything else they published
I don't remember what made Capcom start actually porting their shit after DMC4

>Fantasy Earth Zero[c] was a 2006 massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed for Microsoft Windows. Originally developed by Puraguru (now known as Vanillaware) and Multiterm under the title Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion,[d] it was released by Square Enix as a paid product through its PlayOnline service. It relaunched under Gamepot as a free game, and was later handled by developers SoftGear and Ocean Frontier and was transferred back to Square Enix. Under the premise of a world where rival kingdoms engage in frequent conflicts, players choose an allied kingdom and fight against each other in groups of up to fifty players. The game closed down in September 2022.

It's more likely who's publishing the games. Dragon's Crown is a good example. It took them 15 years to get a publisher to actually get attached to it. And if the publisher says "we want it on Sony platforms but not PC" they have to do it. Plus Sony often pays some of the dev cost if you put games on their system.

Muramasa and the Odin Sphere remake have challenging high difficulty modes and Dragon's Crown has some good spiraling difficulty later on. It's a shame Vanillaware decided to completely abandon any sort of challenging gameplay. Also, Dragon's Crown likely has, for better or worse, a bigger fanbase than almost any classic beat 'em up.

>I don't remember what made Capcom start actually porting their shit after DMC4
Capcom actually had PC ports since the 80s, but the in-house stuff only really began during the 90s with Windows 95/98. Same with Sega, Konami, hell even Square Soft put FF7 and FF8 on Windows 98. The problem was that these ports weren't as good as the console versions, nor did they make as much in sales despite PC development having a lot of extra bullshit to deal with back then, so when you see the big ass gap in Japanese companies releasing things on PC on the regular it's more likely that they didn't want to get burned again after failing in the past.
Anonymous No.724038625 [Report]
Vagrant getting shit canned is honestly such a fucking shame.
It looked pretty sick and the story was much darker than the usual Vanillaware narrative.
I think to me that kind of hurts more than not getting a PC port of their classics.
I already have their games on other consoles. Not having them on PC really sucks, because I WOULD buy them, but I guess they're jaded. Too set in their ways to change now.
That's a real shame. But who fucking knows. Maybe they say fuck it and port it all before they retire. It would be pretty fucking dumb not to do it, if only just for the profit.

>>It took Sega acquiring ATLUS to see the dollar signs for porting shit, and even then it took several YEARS since P4G got ported for PC ports on release to be the standard
Sega doesn't port shit if its not Sonic. That's ALTUS's games, they can do whatever the fuck they want. The Phantasy Star Online spinoffs games are still on original hardware or unlocalized. Most of the Shining Force games are still on original hardware or unlocalized. The other Valkyria Chronicles games are still on original hardware. Fucking Sakrua Wars 6 is PS4 only and don't get me started on the rest of the series and if something is ported to the PC, its Japanese only. Sega is one of the worst examples you could compare them to. They don't give 2 shits about the west or the PC market. Its easier to say they hate your guts than to port their games.

I recall, either on that thread or around somewhere esle, that a chinese guy made better HD textures but locked them behind either a paywall site or just the usual chinese site that needs a password. Sucks..

This thread reminds me I bought odin's sphere and dragon's crown remastered for the PS4 that I never did buy.
I played DC on the original PS3 and Muramasa on the vita.

DC was originally released a dozen years and two gens ago, and it's still wildly popular and people still clamor for it to be brought to PC. Will it be as popular in 12 years? We'll have to see.

porting isn't an automatic process, takes time and effort. Even lending the job to 3rd parties requires oversight, and no guarantee they'll do it right (Risk of Rain 2 is a prime example of that).

They already tried releasing on other platforms and were faced with issues. With Sony they have a familiar & proven pipeline, no reason to deviate. Clearly they don't want to massively expand their studio, and despite occasional money problems they managed to survive and arguably thrive (last 2 games were passion projects) for decades. It's that simple really.
