ness' dad stole his father's money which angered him. aloyisus harbored that anger and was very materialistic as well, which would've rubbed off on porky with him seeing it as possibly the most important thing. porky brings his dad with him to the monotoli building in fourside to show his dad how successful he had become presumably. he wanted to show off his accumulated wealth and success. he even tries to show off to ness at that point with him proclaiming himself as much better than ness because of his success. porky became a materialistic person because his dad was and presumably his mom was as well since she married aloyisus. but material success doesn't bring a person happiness. porky gets far in life in terms of success and hierarchy in the world but he never becomes happy because it's all just empty achievement. porky is empty inside even in mother 3 where he is king of the world.

contrast that with ness and his family where they're all just loving and supportive of each other and don't care about money or material things at all.

i think porky really did want to be ness' friend but just couldn't be the kind of person who was capable of being ness' friend. porky was really cowardly at the beginning so he couldn't bring himself to join ness on his adventure. and i think since abusive tough love was all porky really knew about kinship that he defaulted to being abusive towards ness to show his interest in interacting with him. but porky was also jealous of ness and felt like he needed to prove his superiority to him, like at fourside.
so i think porky is mean to ness for those 2 reasons. there might also have been something going on with his dad disapproving of ness since ness' dad never gave him back his money.

I think that's right on the mark. Porky is so obsessed with "success" that he has to better than Ness. He has to beat Ness to prove he's better than him. I don't personally think he was even influenced by Giygas into harassing Ness. That's all Porky. At the end he makes it a point to ask Ness,

Porky wanted to be cooler than Ness. This extends into how he toys with Lucas at the end of Mother 3 as well. He plays games with him and forces Lucas to lose before he'll let him progress. But just winning isn't enough for Porky. He needs to feel like he accomplished something so Lucas has to pretend like he's actually trying before letting Porky win. Porky is obsessed with being better than others, being cooler than them.

I like to think part of his vendetta was seeing Ness "replace" him with actual friends with the rest of The Chosen Four (starting with a girl no less) and became envious and spiteful.
He wasn't chosen, he's left behind like Naru from Sailor Moon except unlike Naru he chose to take action in a negative way.
Sure he didn't WANT to be chosen anyways because of the danger but it's not like he wanted to see the closest person he had to a friend just leave him and he did seek out grandeur possibly wanting to impress his dad as well given he accompanied him to Fourside.
I don't think Ness was the "unpopular" kid but his "friendship" with Porky probably did him no favors in socializing with others.
Had he not been so impatient or short-sighted or petty, he could've been a supporting friend to the Chosen Four ala Tony.
We know via Magicant that even if Ness' silence meant skepticism and hesitation, he truly wishes Porky was repentant and that whatever bond they did have could be salvaged.
It wasn't until he ran away from everyone in the end that made it harder and harder for him to be redeemed until he let himself age into the lonely, miserable monster he became.

it could even be that porky saw ness as becoming more successful than him as one of the chosen 4 and going on adventures that triggered porky's jealousy. ness was doing great things with his life while porky was being left behind.

Ness was fine on friends, he had the secret clubhouse. Porky was just his same-aged neighbor, parents always push kids like that to try and be friends and Ness was probably nice enough to put up with him to an extent/too young to realize what an asshole porky was. Most kids probably knew a kid a lot like porky.

Like the rest of the game, with porky, a lot is done with a little. They do a great job of making the main characters and the main villain (porky somehow overtakes giygas as the main villain by sheer force of annoying presence) feel like kids, keeping the whole adventure mysterious and grand.

Porky did something much worse than take over as main villain; he INHERITS it from Giygas, who is much like him. Giygas was driven insane by the loss of Maria, his mother, and grew into a malignant thing of hate. Porky simply inherited that same broken nature, and put his own human spin on it with what he did in Mother 3.

as much as i would like seeing a modern audience react to m3 it's probably for the best of never gets an official release outside of japan. i'm not sure if it would even be able to reach a wider audience beyond the already existing fandom.

To be fair I'm not entirely sure if he even did anything that bad. I'm not exactly going to consider abusive parents to be the most reliable narrators. I've always felt like Ness' Dad just got loaned like $5 at the most or something and they're still holding it against him.

we do have the magicant section making it seem that way. but we also have the coffee break where it says "porky, the worst person in your neighborhood, knocked on your door." i think ness did want porky to be his friend but he also had to be weary of porky because of his track record. this translates to ness ignoring porky after he apologizes because can porky be trusted?

but also, they might not have been included to not break the pacing and feel of the final battle. the only cutscene that plays during the final battle is a very emotional one with flint and hinawa naming the kids and going over how they know they'll fight a lot and end up becoming kind and make them proud. showing a few flashbacks of various tonal shifts and one questionable one (claus tells hinawa something funny and lucas looks over at them in shock? what is going on there?) might not have fit very well.
and that one cutscene with flint and hinawa already goes over what is shown in the unincluded cutscenes, with them fighting over rock paper scissors, and playing together, and being kind with their mom.

but it is also slightly ironic that claus remembered being scolded by flint in one of the unused flashbacks for hurting lucas while fighting and hurting lucas in real time in the final battle.

i've been thinking, it's almost collectively agreed on that earthbound is some kind of satire of american culture but it doesn't really feel like it's making fun of america. and you don't even stay in the american inspired locations the whole game. it takes place across several locations all with different cultural influence like dalaam being based on asian countries and winters being based on britain.

and most agree that jeff is british, which makes sense since winters seems britain based. but i have to question if jeff specifically being british is something itoi would've thought of. for instance, would jeff even have a british accent? i assume itoi wouldn't be thinking of the characters having different english speaking accents.
