Can someone explain the context? I know people trade skins and all that, but why would an update destroy item value? Did they increase drop rates or something? Is the update itself good/bad for regular players that don't care about skins?

It is pretty nuts they can manipulate a massive market worth billions like that overnight. Something about it feels illegal but I won’t hold my breath
Anonymous No.724034929 [Report]
According to GTP:
Short version: Valve pushed an October 22–23, 2025 CS2 patch that changed the Trade-Up Contract so you can now craft knives & gloves (including StatTrak variants) from Covert (red) skins. That single change instantly re-ordered supply/demand for many items, causing huge price swings and a reported ~$1.7–2B hit to the skins market in a day. The community is furious — people are review-bombing Steam, posting screenshots of massive inventory losses, and begging Valve to revert or explain

From what I've been reading:
>people used rare CSGO knives as a stock market, each one costing thousands of dollars and stockpiling them, meaning that a lot of people "owned" hundreds of thousands of dollars in "knife stocks"
>also they sold them through a third party webpage so they could get real money, instead of just Steam credit if they sold them through the Marketplace
>Valve shadowdrops a new update that now allows everyone to craft said rare knives using low rarity ones
>rare knives prices instantly crash because they have now become worthless, while the low rarity ones are now worth even more
>approximate loss of 2 billion dollars, but again, it's all monopoly money because they were just stockpiling said knives instead of selling them for true cash
>already a couple of confirmed instances of people killing themselves or going into violent fits because they lost hundreds of thousands in monopoly money

I'm actually curious about how many confirmed suicides have been reported so far.

Nintendo or Pokemon does not have control where their cards land.

If they really hated scalping and want to upend the market they would just mass produce x100 until the illustration rares and rare cards go down severely in price.

Yes, I don’t know about legality, but it’s mind boggling to swing a multi billion dollar market with a game update. Honestly if they wanted to make changes to the system, they should have done it way before it got that big, or made it a gradual process.

imagine telling someone that you invested in skins for a knife on a decade old shooter
>yeah so this one has an extra line of red under where my hand holds it so you can't see it when I play, but it's there. Anyway that makes it worth $5,000
lmao it's just so fucking ridiculous in so many ways. People are total retards this is worse than NFTs. Though I've long felt this way about CSGO and honestly all this content should just be a free part of the game I think. I wouldn't spend money on this stupid shit even if it was $1.

It's not a legit market in the first place. It's the same thing as RMT sellers in MMOs/ARPGs or account sellers/bot farms in live service games. Like you damage the intended game economy and profit off it by playing around cracks in the game system and loopholes etc. Smart people don't waste their time and talents making a career in this shit it's for desperate people or nerds making side gig cash. Like yeah the company can and will change shit without warning and fuck up your tenuous business model overnight they don't owe you shit you're already leeching off them
