I'm not gonna lie I defended it at first but they consistently choose to make his standard neutral face the least flattering expression and any actual emoting ends up looking way out of line, far too extreme. It doesn't fit in with how they handle the rest of their series. I couldn't imagine Mario having his eyes bulge out or have his mouth distort to 5x its normal size, why do it with DK? I still don't absolutely despise it but I really think it needed another artpass or two. That one guy on youtube who made his own model before this game was even announced made a far more interesting neo-classic DK design.

I really couldn't give less of a fuck about the design change. I don't think its better or worse. It just is.
Making DK a big dumb dog was a really weird choice.

I like this design. He doesn't look cool all time time, but when you're attacking or hes pissed off I think he looks pretty badass. I don't think it's a big deal if he looks like a funny ape when not in combat or angered.

I actually prefer the bulkier body over the previous leaner look. Helps sell that DK is a powerhouse of an ape.
Unfortunately, Bananza failed to sell me on everything above the shoulders. The brow becoming more flexible isn't a bad thing, but that look where his brow turns into an M shape is genuinely ugly and he does it so goddamn often. I also hate the tongue, especially those scenes where Pauline/Odd Rock falls on him and he just starts flailing it around. And I think it's incredibly telling that all his new 2D art keeps his eyes separated, he has too much 'open' space in his eye area now.
That edit on the right is actually very idealized imo.

It's the eye to mouth ratio that makes him look stupid and uncool. They moved his eyes closer together and his mouth wider. It doesn't help that they keep having him making exaggerated meme faces.

Same, they really ruined a good thing with DK, they've also made him dumber and goofier. The real protagonist is pauline for nintendo, DK is just a punchline, now

I'm kind of annoyed about that too. It would have been cool if it was just a DK focused game entirely without the Pauline gimmick attached to it. DK finally gets a new 3D platformer but the vibes are all off because this isn't DK having monkey time all to himself, he's gotta babysit Pauline who Nintendo really wants you to care about. It's a bummer.
