1-2 were mind blowing at the time. 3 was buggy as hell so not that popular. Note that they both came out at a time when fighting games were in a slump, 1s only competitor was DOA2 which was nowhere near as impressive. SC1 was like watching shaolin monks doing demonstrations, completely mind blowing at the time. SC2 was big due to being multiplatform, and for ex. on Xbox it had no competition except DOA3 again. On Gamecube it had no competition whatsoever. On PS2 it only faced competition from Tekken (same company) and Virtua Fighter 4 (which nobody cares about outside japan).
SC4 was riding the "next gen" transition hype when it came out and it had fucking Darth Vader and Yoda as guest characters. By then the designs became so ridiculous that it just wasn't as popular. Also this time it was up against Street Fighter 4.
