The English game manual for the Wii version of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U trophy for Lubba refer to her as male, as do Super Mario Galaxy 2's French and Italian localizations. However, the German and Spanish localizations refer to her as female. In the Japanese text, Lubba and the Lumas are generally not referred to with gendered terms, but the Japanese text of her Super Smash Bros. for Wii U trophy contains the line "[Her] straightforward manner of speech gives the impression of an older lady from a working-class neighborhood." (「ざっくばらんな口調は下町のおばさんみたい。」)[1] In a staff interview published in a Japanese Super Mario Galaxy 2 guidebook, Yoshiaki Koizumi briefly referred to Lubba as "aunt-like" before quickly following up that he did not know Lubba's gender.[2] Starting with the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2, she is consistently referred to as female across all regions.
