Pretty much the only "sandbox MMO" anybody still plays. All the other popular MMOs follow the WoW formula or going from point A to B getting generic xp until the next cinematic/dungeon.
OSRS is the only popular MMO that gives no shits what you do, you make your own path.

>How does economy function in this game?
There's an auction house, prices are dynamic based on supply and demand
>How is inflation handled?
A few different ways. Some of the skills like construction are massive gold sinks, and expensive items listed in the auction house have a % cut 'taken' where the excess gold just gets deleted. Some mid/late game equipment also is used to make end game equipment, so the former doesn't lose its value, but thats less common.

bots. It shows crazy growth because of bots.
After the main place bots lived (duel arena) closed down, the game saw a third of it's players vanish literally overnight, and there were still bots roaming around. Nowadays it's not an unfathomable thing to state the game's averaging 50% of it's total playercount being bots at the minimum.
I love osrs but it's not popular.

its been confirmed that only about 10-15% of the population are true bots. There is likely some gold farmers in there as well, but it is definitely not 50% kek, not sure where you got that number from. Also the game is immensely popular, it honestly might be pulling better numbers than WoW these days. Sailing's launch with the HD update will probably make the player count hit 300k, which is crazy.

after leaving Jagex, Mat K gave the semi-official number of 10-12%. He had no more ties to the company after leaving so I don't think he'd just lie or give a PR number. We can both play the game of 'that source is unreliable', because bot creators would also like to make it look like more people use their bot too. I think its somewhere in the middle, so I'd say 15%. I DO think there are also some gold farmers too, not nearly as many as bots though. OSRS has just grown in popularity over time as other MMOs go to shit, mostly WoW and RS3. The game is simple and just had a really broad appeal.

>How is inflation handled? If people are continually playing for years, it would make any material have astronomical cost
There are a lot of factors that keep prices of materials and gear relatively stable. First and foremost, bots are the foundation of the economy and continuously provide supply to meet the demand of everything from basic resources to endgame drops; the devaluing of valuable resources and items from excessive botting is a much bigger concern than inflation.
There is also a continuous influx of new accounts entering the economy, whether they're bots, new players or alternate accounts of existing players, which maintains the value of early and mid-game resources. Few people have been exclusively playing on one account for 10+ years and accumulated more wealth than they know what to do with, "maxed mains" who have 99 in every skill are quite rare (only about 70,000 accounts currently). Many players/new accounts also opt in to the "Ironman" game mode where they and the resources they bring into the game are essentially cut off from the game's economy (though they can still drop resources to "main" accounts).

The Runescape clones fail because they have AWFUL early game but still have the gall to ask you to grind for no reason. There's little to no content to actually do, but they sure as hell mapped out their 1-99 progression. Which is backwards to how Runescape was designed and iterated upon.
Early OSRS has tutorial island (which is basically just a quest that teaches you how to play the game) and then immediately outside at Lumbridge there's some early quests like the ghost quest or baking a cake. You can do quests like Demon Slayer and The Knights Sword that reward you cool looking new equipment.

t. played a lot of runescape clones and was working on my own

Honestly I think one of the biggest draws to OSRS is even the endgame content is fairly simple to understand. Most of it just comes to click timing. Compare this to WoW, which (for right now) hard requires like 20 add ons to understand the fuck is going on and you have to watch 10 guides per boss before you can understand how to do it.

People voted for "a new skill to be added to the game" by 80%, so they came up with Sailing (which had been a meme for a decade but seriously proposed before), Taming (raising and using animal companions, basically Summoning or making useful pets), and Shamanism (a weird mix of gathering and artisan skill, probably most similar to RS3 Necromancy and Invention, getting materials for rituals and using them to make support/utility items and augment gear)
Sailing made the most sense to me but I'd be interested in them pitching Shamanism again. Aside from the rewards which never really got explained, the idea of taking the Spirit Realm from the Corporeal Beast quest which is content that Runescape hasn't touched in like 15 years and integrating that idea across the game seems like it has a ton of potential.

>taking the Spirit Realm [...] and integrating that idea across the game seems like it has a ton of potential.
And that's all it was, empty potential. It needed the promise of a huge area expansion to compete with Sailing's, but no concrete ideas for spirit world content were ever proposed.
They should have proposed skills smaller in scope, players should have told Jagex to make the skills smaller in scope, but everyone was high off huffing "potential". Sailing will probably turn out fine, but it occupied the most experienced developer team for three years.

Grindy? Yes. Idle? If you want to.
No one is stopping you from powermining iron but you lose smithing xp or possible money. Or tick mine granite if you are insane. Most likely you'll hang out in Morherload Mine or Blast Mine, maybe Amethysts to afk more.

OSRS is balance of
>Time(aka xp/hour)
>Attention(apm)
>Resources(either gaining or losing while getting xp)
>Requirements(Quests, item upgrades, achievement diaries, etc.)
for xp rates. Some stuff is more or less "obsolete" but even they have usually collection log unlocks if nothing else, or better xp rates requires quests or such.
For example everyone's favorite skill: Runecraft.
You can mine your essence yourself and craft highest runes. But essence mining is slow. Well you can also buy them but that costs money(not that much tho). Or do bossing for possible drops but that requires combat things. You can also do something like easy Temple Trek, but that needs few quests done.
And fastest xp for is to make lava runes, but that needs lunar spell book and binding necklaces for best xp rates.
However many does Guardians of the Rift, as it has unlocks and costs no resources, plus you get different runes. It is technically the best one for xp/resource balance but you cannot choose that well what runes to make. You can also do slower xp rates but make money with it.
Smithing has turning gold ore in gold bars at blast furnace but you lose money on both paying for it and gold bars having no value. It's also very active.
Or you can do Giant's Foundry for for good xp but it's resource intensive and needs some attention, though you also get gold and unlocks.
Or you can just afk smelt cannonballs for profit(preferably bit faster cannonballs with Giant's Foundry double ammo mould).

It's that kind of fun balance that makes you interact with quests and stuff. On other MMOs you rush to newest raids for best unlocks and that's it. All earlier content is obsolete and low levels are considered worst times in other MMOs

You don't have to worry about seasonal shit, all progress matters.
In something like WoW, your max lvl character in full epic gear will instantly turn to worthless shit once the new patch with higher ilevel gear comes out. An uncommon rarity sword will have three times the dps of an epic rarity sword from the previous patch

In OSRS, God Wars items are still valuable, because developers make an active effort to ensure older gear remains valuable, even if newer and far better gear gets released.

Very excited for this. When I played the sailing alpha with my friend he immediately got his boat stuck in some rocks and within a minute there was 10 different players anchored around him trying to give him advice on how to get out, it was pure soul. Ok nigger, let me tell you why RS3 is bad.
>OSRS world is better; if you want to start mining, best place to go is to the dwarves. If you want to learn to hunt, go to the corner of the map south of Yanille, all makes sense. But in RS3 we can't scare the new player, so here is this area in Burthorpe where you can do all the noob skills.
>OSRS story is better. Ribbiting tale and getting ahead gives small little stories to worldbuild areas, and larger quests like DT2 provide epic adventures. RS3 has the LITERAL FUCKING GODS of the runescape universe talk to the player and quip Marvel lines. Pic related is actual transcript dialogue from an RS3 quest.
>RS3 has a completely bloated and confusing UI that takes a good half hour just to setup in a way that isn't cancer to navigate it.
>RS3 has MTX and ability to just pay for 99s, or at least it used to. They probably got mogged so hard by OSRS that they are removing this and begging players to come back to mainline

This is something modern MMOs are in very desperate need of. It's crazy that when you don't design an entire MMO around the "endgame" and having people hit the "early endgame" as quickly as possible, the vast majority of the game stays relevant, even if just a little bit.

Screw the gay relationship and marvel quips, this is just shoving newspeak from real life into fantasy without being satire. The game is humoristic enough to let some real life references slide but this was just deterring so much from the questing experience I just wrote off RS3 permanently.

Endgame in OSRS is just jarring. The intrinsic delay and inaccuracy of your character's location takes a while to get used to.

Absolutely infurating PVE because of the bad controls being a requirement for the end game

And its funny because the most infuriating boss fight out of difficulty is jad, not because he's hard but because hes a time sink and the waves are not skippable at all so you waste 1 hour+ just to get an attempt or get one shotted. Easily the worst boss in the game.

How do I make myself enjoy OSRS better bros?
Friend roped me into it a few months ago, currently lv. ~1780 (70+ in everything but RC) and it feels like all I'm doing at this point is boring myself to tears.
Skilling is the most boring "content" in the entire game and my ADHD brain can't take any more than an hour of doing a click-loop that requires constant attention. Some of the more semi-idle methods (e.g. motherlode mine, wintertodt, dart tip smithing etc.) I can tolerate by watching a movie or show in the background, but still. Star mining and Slayer can at least be decently AFK to the point where I can just play another game on the side.
On the other hand, raids/bossing is just a vicious circle. Feels like everything is (realistically) gated behind having better gear, which tends to cost many many millions, which requires doing rewarding content (raids/bosses) to get drops in the first place.
I already got PTSD after doing Vorkath 200+ times and Moons 100+ times, and it's all just so boring now that I can basically do it half-asleep, but I know I need the money or I can't move on to better stuff.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - I genuinely want to find a way to enjoy the game more, it just feels like I've basically got Mount Everest ahead of me before i can even begin to touch more "interesting" content.

Don't fall into the trap of only being allowed to do what is most gp/hour as a main
Just send content. As long as you aren't bankstanding for 10+ minutes between trips, you'll make money.
If you want to kill Muspah then kill Muspah
If you want to kill Vardorvis then kill Vardorivs
Doesn't fucking matter, just send the fucking content

Ultimately your entry level basic bitch raiding gear set will cost you about 300m in total, and you can make that with 100 hours or so of decent pace pvm. That'll be your bowfa, your fang, your blood moon set, your ahrims/trident, and a decent potion stash to keep you going. Once you're there, you want to join a clan and learn raids, then just scatter some of that in amongst the rest of your activities to break the tedium up.

OSRS is a game about setting goals and achieving them. If you fall into the trap of "I need to grind this slop boss endlessly for money so I can buy better gear so I can kill the boss faster so uhhh" you're going to hate the game and burn out. Aspirational content like inferno and colo provide clear long-term goals to work towards but for things like raids you really don't even need that much starting capital. I think what you're doing is looking at bis for the raid and assuming you can't get in without full torva or some shit but look at tob - void with a blowpipe and a whip rapes that raid to death. ToA just needs some basic moons gear to clear 300s easily. For that first starting capital to get those initial cheap sets just do literally whatever you find fun and rewarding, don't trap yourself into doing vorkath forever because you found it to be the most efficient.

Guess I'll try running some different bosses over the weekend and we'll see, if only for the novelty factor.
As for raids I got into my friend's clan that's breddy gud, so that side of things is at least sorted.

You're not wrong about the goals - I found that while I was doing quests I at least had that goal of completion to work towards, but once I completed them all, it vanished into thin air and I wasn't sure what the next "goal(s)" would be.
Then I just saw people in my friend's clan getting 900m drops from raids so I figured that'd be the next thing to work towards, and yup, the gear setups just seemed to be crazy expensive so moneymaking was all that stuck in my mind.

F2P is like 5% of the game, basically a demo. As a new player it's a pretty decent introduction to the game and can be fun to at least do all the F2P quests to try out the game, beating Dragon Slayer is rite of passage and a genuine accomplishment.
Beyond that though yes, the vast majority of the game is members only. You should try F2P and see if you can get into it, but you will be really limited on how much you can do with your buddy until you progress to members.

This is only because the WoW are like crack addicts about their sense of attachment to the fictional lore of WoW and "sense of community" they've build over the years. Which is to say, fuck all.

Does anyone actually enjoy OSRS pvp? It seems way too unbalanced in things like castle wars where if you wear non-dragon armor you will be permanently frozen in place by ancient magic until death. My only fun I have had with it is using a poisoned abyssal dagger and killing people at the zamorak temple in the wilderness.

I only enjoy pvp in free to play. Members has too much cancer
>voidwaker (I quit PVP on rs3 pre-eoc when Korasi came out, then it happened again in osrs)
>30s freezes
>Vengeance
>getting stacked out in 1 tick (rare but does happen)
>having to eat the instant your HP falls under 70 or someone will just spec you out
In free to play you can just buy like 5 full rune sets + scim + 2h for a mil and spend several hours whacking 28s on people.

OSRS, as soon as they released Zulrah, went right back to the RS3 design philosophy whose downfall was that they copied the WoW design philosophy. Immediately, bosses drops turn into money generators which drop massive amounts of noted resources, undermining 2/3 of the skills in the game. Before this, bosses used to COST money to kill until you get the rare drop.
There are no developers who actually worked on Runescape back in the day left, everyone on the OSRS team was from the RS3 team, which is apparent in how they can't get the art style right and the dialogue in quests include stale Reddit memes.

They are, but pretty much only in set locations on pvp/wilderness worlds. The hotspots are north of Edgeville for pures and Lumbridge church for high levels. Ferox Enclave sees some use too for high levels but I have way better luck finding fights in Lumbridge.

I put 666 hours into it this year. Played for the first time since like 2003, as ironman. I got to around lv 70 everything, most of the time you'll be looking at requirements to do something. I avoided all long grinds as much as possible, just doing quests for exp optimally. The quests are dialogue are fun, the older quests are retarded because they're designed just as annoying fetch quests with very limited inventory space. Newer quests are pretty cool. Combat stats dont really mean anything anymore because of the crab, which is kinda sad. Gear progression is cool too. Even if you're not going to grind out shit, things take a very long time to do. You'll log in and set up like a goal "today I will get this unlock/item" and thats all you have time for that day.

I want to die, this is by far the worst skill in the game. Even pre GOTR you could at least stop runecrafting at like 60.

every other mmo on the market is just a shitty ARPG with bad itemization and boring classes.
OSRS is a lot closer to what the genre used to be about - going to another place to exist within for an indefinite period of time. nothing will ever beat the early 2000s in terms of socializing with randoms online and getting lost in a fantasy world, but these days nobody is even trying

Hours of edging with no release. You spend weeks thinking about how cool getting 99 in a skill will feel. Then you get it and feel nothing. But you keep playing because you are addicted and actually believe the next 99 will make you feel something. You pick a harder skill like slayer. Spend 2 months slaying 10 hours a day. Finally get 99 and still feel nothing. It is probably the most depressing game I have ever played in my life and I wasted thousands of hours on it that I could have spent outdoors learning valuable skills
