He asks Eddie about the monsters, who also acknowledges them but neither try to figure out why they're here. I consider all the main characters as being totally resigned to their fate and just moving forward.

My honest guess is, getting the characters to realistically get accustomed to this hellscape in a timely, and interesting manner isn't possible story-wise. You'd waste too much time having characters freaking out and asking the same questions, so the solution is, to never properly address it and the player just have to roll with it.

i think it was just the epicenter of the three of them being in the town together. without Alessa or the cult it seemed to be running rudderless just calling to people with pain and suffering that it could feed off of. it was probably like the culmination of their inner darkness and the town's tainted power coming together to create the prison/maze. the town basically fed off of their torment down there. i don't think Angela was really in the hotel via the same route, she was still in the maze but the town opened up a path between them.

That's all twitter later fanon. I read all the Japanese SH2 guidebooks, and they confirm a lot of interpretations are right, but they never mention it. And it contradicts the literal events that we see in the endings.

In most of the endings James kills Maria, and then we warp to the room where Mary died and they have that heart to heart. In most endings James just leaves, but in the Water ending James picks up her body and leaves with it.

Why is it so strange that he did that?

I don't know if it was specifically Maine, AFAIK the town being in Maine was only something confirmed fairly recently, like well after Team Silent was disbanded. It was always supposed to just be somewhere in Northeastern USA.

it was pretty much considered all but canonically Maine by the majority of the fanbase because Stephen King was a major influence on Silent Hill (Alessa=Carrie) and he set almost all of his books there. there wasn't any indication that it was or could be anywhere else.

according to Tomm Hulett, the apartment buildings were actually based on the real life apartments of a Konami of America employee who lived in California. and Team Silent actually did location scouting there and not Maine, so i misremembered where they did the location scouting. but it makes sense given that's a lot closer to Japan. a few buildings in San Francisco were taken 1:1 and put into SH2. and the actual layout of the town was modeled after lake resort towns in Japan, so it's just something else that adds to the weird otherness of the town.

the original is the best. the remake isn't bad, but it's just not as good. by its very nature it's a more 'gamey' experience which takes away from a lot of the original atmosphere of the game, always holding your hand and guiding you to the next setpiece rather than letting you get lost and up in your own head about what you should be doing.
