The sad thing is that NFTs could actually be interesting for games, the problem is that it also allows abuse by those who control it. The actual promise of the feature is undermined by "just trust me bro" from the corporations to do it responsibly and not be tempted to do such things as creating artificial scarcity and causing chaos in the markets of its own games for the sake of profit. It's not entirely unlike the CS2 skin market, actually. Just without tokens.

Realistically, it was just trying to add something tangible to cryptos, mostly to manufacture artificial scarcity and drive up prices.

For each character on the right in that same image, assume $200 per character

Why would anyone like them? Players assume all the risk, the company avoids all of it, but gets to skim off the top forever like a parasite. It's quite literally the perfect and complete financialization of games. Valve is a massive nigger company, and so are its fans. They started this trash with CS skin trading, which is exactly what NFT marketplace dream is in every single way except the blockchain. You stupid gamer niggers can't criticize all these other companies about wanting to do it while you have double standards with Valve. They see with CS that gamers ARE ok with it, so they will just keep rebranding it and try again. If you niggers had any integrity, you all would reject and force Valve to kill off all forms of this, but you won't do shit. So NFT marketplaces are coming and they are here to stay, because in the end you all are ok with it, as long as it has your favorite company logo plastered on it. Companies didn't kill gaming, you niggers did. At this point, nobody with a brain blames corporations for the way this industry has turned out.

since other posters are retarded or underage: nfts are a digital receipt that shows who holds the receipt, who previously held the receipt, and when it was transferred. it is de facto tamper-proof and infallible.
>but why
-esoteric financial stuff that is mostly redundant because trusted third parties exist and if they didn't those esoteric financing tools wouldn't be much use because world would be post-apoc
-potentially IP stuff I guess but nobody in their right mind would design a digital marketplace for used media so that whole sector is a bit moot
-le interoperability between games which doesn't happen not because of IP stuff but because nobody who is good at making games wants to make a game that uses NFTs

NFTs could be cool if they had the right implementation in a game as loot or something, right? wouldn't this help create awesome markets in MMOs with items that are actually valuable?

On some level it seems like it might, but it just turns games from something to enjoy to something you invest and speculate in. It destroys what makes it enjoyable and turns it into another stock market. It's basically bank parasitism creeping into the digital world, and infecting games. And unlike banks which at least on the face of it has to follow some regulations, every single company gets to control their own economy and skim off the top for every resale of anything for eternity like a fucking juice parasite. It can still render your token useless, it can create fake scarcity, and everything else. It doesn't really matter though, because even without tokens or NFT you can still do the same thing. This is exactly what the knife skins is, and people love it. Hating or rejecting NFTs ultimately doesn't matter, because you can still do the same shit without it.

Games already keep track of their items with IDs and who "owns" them. They could even allow their games to work together and its work across games and platforms, but nobody wants that. I would say the biggest thing is that it destroys the immersion of a single cohesive game world which is kind of the point of the interactive experience. You don't want to know about how the game you're playing relates to the real world or unrelated games.
