Ever since I started using Linux I've gained a renewed sense of joy for vidya.
Obviously it isn't perfect nor it is a full replacement for Windows if you wany to play all games, but I've found that usually the only games I can't play are only the sloppiest of slops which I wouldn't care for anyway.
Most new games that are worth a dime are playable on Linux.
So in a way, Linux has helped me filter shitty games and don't waste my time, money on slop.

Try checking out CachyOS, Bazzite or even just Ubuntu on youtube. There's tons of distros that integrate Nvidia drivers now. It's not perfect but in no way "unusable".

Ignore Bazzite or Ubuntu and just use Debian with flatpaks or something to get newer software. If you are using very new hardware, then use Arch and read the wiki.
CachyOS can work, but only for sex in the missionary position purely for reproductive purposes with the reassurance that your scented candles (Reddit ricing configs) won't burn your house down. You can't run it in a VM and it might have edge case problems for anything that isn't running games with wine/proton.

SteamOS is just Arch with KDE plasma desktop. So CachyOS, or any distro based off Arch. You could just install Arch directly nowadays with the installer is really simple but would take a little more time and know-how to setup.

Remember that most people are still only discovering Linux. So recommending a noobie friendly distro with lots of youtube videos and reddit posts is useful for troubleshooting.

It's not about perfection, some things straight up don't work. If you have your own setup and whatever you want working great on linux, you're in luck. If you don't, why should you be pushed to switch over there? Most people you're practically advertising this for aren't going to contribute fixes that are necessary. Shoving gaymers into linux is great with devices like the Steam Deck which were designed with it in mind. But not great when talking about nvidia users, for instance. If I wanted to make linux work for everyone I would wait until they actually get their shit together.

Yeah, it's not perfect but pretty close. I too keep a separate SSD with W10 LTSC for VR and the occasional game that just doesn't wanna work on Linux. I've experienced at most a 20% perf loss in the most extreme cases, and it sucks but most games don't drop bellow 60 FPS. I'll gladly take the loss if that means not using windows.

You can use any fork of proton you download. CachyOS has its own added version to the list. All there is about CachyOS is that it adds repositories, some software installed by default, and patched kernels.

ALVR works perfectly fine for VR on Linux even which surprised me
The problem is a 20% perf hit can push a game over the edge into feeling shitty and especially in VR where you want ideally 0 dropped frames. I had some trouble with Alyx dropping frames but admittedly this might be because i like to push like 3Kx3K per eye minimum, VR really needs that super sampling. And God help you if you try UEVR with a UE5 game, you really need that 20% of performance back and more.
I just really should be encrypting my Linux partitions... they're BTRFS and Windows can't read them on the user level but that's hardly a real privacy safeguard lol

You can install whatever you want. You don't even have to use CachyOS to get the forked proton versions, you can get them on base Arch. Cachy only saves you the step of installing them yourself. And of course, they get updated by the Cachy team because that's what they focus on.

Youtube videos waste a lot of your time on irrelevant shit to pad out runtime, they're not a good way to find information, and Reddit posts will be a kludge of misinformed and outdated information, I would not use either of these to learn how to use something or troubleshoot and would probably sooner recommend Debian or Arch while using the Arch wiki for most problems.

Bazzite is specifically an immutable Fedora OS, so it's going to be weird to use if that's not what you want and it's just getting memed because of how SteamOS is perceived on the Steamdeck as some kind of magic bullet solution.
Ubuntu is the awkward middle child between Debian and Ubuntu derivatives, since it makes a bunch of usability tweaks to Debian, but also adds a bunch of dumb shit that gets pruned out by derivatives. Since your results may vary when it comes to Ubuntu derivatives, I think that it's probably better to just recommend Debian + an additional packaging system like flatpak or appimage to get newer packages.

CachyOS contains a bunch of tweaked packages by default, but they can be added to pacman based distros very easily, both due to the AUR and because CachyOS has scripts for adding its repos to vanilla Arch.

In most cases software on Linux is cross-compatible with other Linux distributions. Just like it doesn't matter which Android ROM you're using when installing an apk. That is, unless something specifically targets one distribution. Nvidia does have more settings exposed than AMD, but only through X11.
Like if you had a monitor that wrongly gets detected to use a limited color range through HDMI on linux, and an AMD GPU, your only option is to extract an EDID, use wxEDID (which works like ass, I must say), and do a whole bunch of steps to load that custom EDID you've created. Whereas on the nvidia settings panel you just have to change a setting.
AMD on linux is a thing that just works until you hit the wall and find out there's practically like 3 or 4 settings. It's easier to undervolt on it though.

Proton is compatible with any distro. The only thing that matters for Proton is what version of graphics libraries and drivers you have. Any distro that isn't made for servers is updated fast enough for Proton to work fine. So just avoid Debian, Ubuntu LTS, Mint, ZorinOS, etc. Just focus on Arch/Fedora-based distros or the non-LTS version of Ubuntu (or any distro based on the non-LTS version of Ubuntu).

It will be stale, yes. But you can use Debian Sid if you really want to just stick to raw Debian. I wouldn't recommend this for people who aren't interested in setting up the whole OS themselves, but it is an option.
Something like non-LTS Ubuntu, or Bazzite/Aurora/Bluefin, or even Manjaro is much more usable out of the box for the majority of users.
CachyOS is fine too, but again it can feel overwhelming for non-technical people and there's little benefit in using CachyOS compared to other distros. According to most benchmarks there's a very insignificant performance difference between distros like CachyOS, Bazzite and Nobara. They all share performance patches between each other.

I used to run Artix Linux, but I switched to Windows Ghost Spectre.
Linux is good and all, most anti cheats simply reject Linux, and I can't play MP games with my friends.

On desktops? Yes. It's an unusable OS that very few people use.
On servers? Nobody updates it as in v12->v13. Servers just shut down the OS and redeploy a newer version once they migrate their software to be compatible with the latest libraries.

So, yes. It is a system nobody is using long term by upgrading to the latest version. People who do often have issues updating it. And the silent majority of people do not want to fuck around with issues coming from updating their OS to the latest version. That's the primary reason why SteamOS itself is immutable, it eliminates this issue entirely.

I have a GTX 1070 on Mint. You can just swap the default driver to the nvidia one in the driver manager which will drastically improve game performance. It's just one click to select it, and one click to confirm. Then reboot and you're good to go.
