SHMUPs (STGs) were called "Shooters" before Doom came around and then FPS games were called "Doomclones." Before finally during the first few games that actually used 3D graphics were they called "First Person Shooters" because there also were Over The Shoulder shooters or "Third Person Shooters." Which you don't see much these days.
