Nioh is sick but it's more like a more complex Soulslike than a character action game. You have a lot more options and more intricate weapon abilities and generally much more versatility so it kind of broaches the line but fundamentally it feels like a Soulslike and doesn't really compare with NG.
Not in a bad way though. Nioh 2 is one of my favourite games.

Just beat it 5 minutes ago. While not the hardest Ninja Gaiden game I've (Razor's Edge stomped my dick in the dirt with that shadow Ryu fight to the point I just dropped it) it was still incredibly fun and I let out a very audible "HOLY SHIT" when I first got to play as Ryu. Yakumo's raven form is very cool and all but that blade gleam ability was a straight game changer.

I was a young lad when I got the original Ninja Gaiden on my Xbox along with Halo CE, I didn't had much money for games at the time so I replayed the shit out of the few I had, so by the time Black came around I was already halfway through my Master Ninja playthrough. How do you play NG? Not in the literal sense of the controls but in terms of moment to moment gameplay.
I started NG1 on the master collection a couple days ago thinking it would feel like any other character action games but the movement intertia makes it hard to play and at some points it feels more like a slow-paced fighting game in that I'm blocking and dodging attack strings to take my turn on the enemy and that there's a "neutral" in some points. The first boss definitely felt like a fighting game almost.
I don't know if I'm just playing it wrong or what but I'm warming up to it though now in Chapter 6 after initially hating it a fuckton

Its got a minimum range at which point it gets really finnicky, if you're trying to do it and just slashing straight down then you're probably too close, and you want to use windmill slash to close at that range.
Wind run (A+X) helps with the direction if you're just whiffing the input.
