If the core fanbase around your franchise still exists, if you can still meaningfully discuss the old games in any capacity, if you can make a clean break between the old and the new and easily ignore everything after that break - your favorite franchise has not suffered the worst death that a franchise can have.
What's happened to some of the franchises I like can be described as an apocalypse.

Official devs turn out not to understand why the players liked the game so much.
To me it's the worst. To know they didn't know what they were doing, that it was an accident, that they were stupid and me as well, i turn out stupid as a result. Was there no creative intent behind any of this perfect clockwork?
It was born of failure. Had the devteam succeeded, would the game have been lesser?

Or maybe the devs did understand their own work but ended up not caring anymore and selling it off to a traveling circus. So i'm left caring greatly for an abandoned child i'm unable to rescue, buying circus tickets once in a while just to see him again. But it's all just a videogame. Grow up stop caring.

Personally it was like 5-6 years ago for me now?
I was playing some $3 shovelware multiplayer game I found on steam and there was this one area where you could do typing races against other people and if you did it enough times you would unlock a mechanical keyboard item you could throw at other people for fun.
So I parked my ass down on that spot and played it alone for an hour or two cause no one else was around, and once in a while a random would show up and suck ass at the game for 5 seconds before leaving.
Eventually this one person showed up that was actually really good at it, and they stuck around and raced me in the game for probably an hour or two before we stopped and thanked each other for all the good games, and that eventually led to chatting.
Turns out English wasn't even her first language, she was just learning it as a hobby and her actual first language was Japanese. So we got chatting about our countries and the media and shit we were into, and by the end of the night we had added each other on discord/steam and decided to keep in touch.

We don't hang out as regularly as we used to these days now that we're both older and busier, but we still chat occasionally and send each other cool albums we have been listening to recently.

The worst way for a series to die is for it to continue living in a degenerate form, in the custody of a successful company.
>Zelda
It took 7 fucking years to develop Tears of the Kingdom, and it'll take 7 more to develop the next 3D Zelda. 14 years of Breath of the Wild Zelda. People who love classic 2D and 3D Zelda are going to be waiting forever for a crumb, if Nintendo even decides to toss them one.
>Fallout
>The Elder Scrolls
If you thought I was exaggerating with the Zelda example, it's already been 14 years since the last TES game, and 10 since the last full-fledged Fallout game, which was an abomination. Fallout will very likely never get another good game, but it is fated to live on in perpetuity in Bethesda's clutches, until - after 17 years - Fallout 5 is released. And it's shit. Meanwhile, InXile will never be allowed to develop a Fallout CRPG even though Microsoft owns the IP.

There's plenty of other examples.

Only it wasn't dead. Larian had proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that classic Forgotten Realms RPGs can not only be revived, but achieve mainstream success.

So imagine just how bad of a company WotC were that they decided to cease all work on the expansion, cut ties completely, and move on.

the reverse happened with fire emblem, prior to path of radiance and radiant dawn the series was heavily flawed, even courting the spiritual trannysm.

the awakening, fates, shadows of valentia (even if a remake) were amazing.

3 houses almost ruins the franchise but the adjacent trannies misinterpreting edelgard are just a minor problem, they dont sour it for me.

>What is the worst way for a video game series to die?

yeah its bad if a series stops getting produced but it's even worse when it becomes completely mainstream and turns into something completely different, might as well call it death by flanderization

Unfinished
>And did your favorite series die in such a way?
Partially, with regards to Deus Ex. On the one hand each game really is about its own perspective on the overarching themes, on the other it's clear there was still a story being told in regards to the prequels and Adam Jensen specifically, and that we'll never see the full conclusion.

I never expected STALKER 2 to be made at all, let alone good. The fact that they couldn't outperform what modders were doing 15 years ago is a testament to the death of talent in this industry. Nearly everything is loveless extraction, parading the corpses of once-beloved properties around on stilts like flesh kites.

Because modern fans are usually people raised on algorithimic social media that ragebaits them for engagement and encourages them to get into fights about everything. At a certain point this turns into them thinking anyone who disagrees with them at all is The Enemy, and they care more about fighting The Enemy than they do about actually enjoying anything.

I dont know the worst way but the best way is for your favorite series to have released all its entries before the HD era, have no remakes, and be untouched by modern lepers.

It's not my favorite franchise but what happened to Duke Nukem still really pisses me off. To have playable, inarguable proof that the Forever could have been the best shooter of 2002 if they just fucking finished it, and instead having the version we got and the franchise forever in the hands of that greasy pedophile instead.

I miss old gen Monster Hunter so much.

I miss the old /v/ threads about it.
I miss when the game was niche but we had a small and fun community.

I hate that I read every panel in that strip. So many people miss the point of Lara Croft and, ironically enough, they end up making her kill way more people than she ever did in the original Core Design games. You kill maybe 6 people in Tomb Raider 1 and the rest of the time you shoot demons, dinosaurs, wolves, bears, tigers, gorillas, and bats. New Tomb Raider also constantly brings up Joshua and tries to find some way to give Lara a love life which is just as annoying now as it was in 80s action movies.

When it's developers get bought by a bigger company that pisses the original devs off enough for them to leave, or straight up fires them.

Not a series, but PopCap deserved better.

>that VN
The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. No other game I've played had a 17 year old bishonen guy drink a 14 year old girl's piss and chase her down the hall to rape her, only to wind up getting anally raped by a 32 year old fat man. I still remember the scene where a 16-17 girl was hiding under a bed as her same age best friend was having sex with that same 32 year old fat guy on top. She heard every moan, bed shake and sound. In the wrong end she was discovered under the bed by her friend and made to join. A most terrifying scene was when an unwilling girl relives another girl's sex memories. The girl in the memory consented but the reliving girl didn't. It didn't matter that she was mentally screaming, her body in the memory did all the motions and actions as in history. It's like mind control rape except the victim was fully aware. Another scene the same girl and a friend were almost raped in a magic sex ritual, saved by the girl's older sister, and the backlash made the older sister want to rape her younger sister and friend.

The loli in this pic is freakishly lewd and once disguised herself as a teenage girl, fucked a boy until he nearly came, transformed back saying
>You thought you were having sex with a highschooler weren't you? I'm an elementary schooler all along!
And leglocks that boy, forcing him to cum inside her unprotected, when he screams in fear upon learning this. This isn't even getting into the tentacles, the gay sex, the lesbian sex, the incest, the sequel's mother/daughter lesbian scene, etc. The first chapter alone contains lots of lesbian sex scenes with an unavoidable girl masturbating in the bathroom. Truly horror is intrinsically connected with sexuality.
