I play more Xbox games now than I ever have. If they never put there games on PC, then they'd always get exactly $0 from me. Just like Sony has gotten exactly $0 from me since 2006 when they released the PS3.

If I don't care about the first Xbox or the Xbox 360, what am I missing by not getting an Xbox console and just playing Xbox games on PC like everything else?

Exclusivity makes sense when consoles are all different
When consoles are just a locked x86 PC under the hood, exclusivity becomes a meme. Locking games on a specific piece of hardware is similar to locking movies on a specific blu-ray player.

Vast majority of games are not exclusive and compete amongst each other. Third parties are not interested in exclusivity unless given a large bag of cash. Xbox has dropped it. Playstation is in the process of doing it. Nintendo will eventually drop it by 2050 or so (lol).
The future is being able to play whatever you want wherever you want, as long as your device meets the hardware requirements.

Either 343 inherited it or the franchise would've stopped being made after 2010, because Bungie wanted out even before Halo 3 was released and only through contractual agreement of making ODST/Reach did Microsoft allow that to happen.
Also Halo was a product of its time ala babbys first FPS on consoles in a time when it stood out for having intuitive controls that your grandmother could pick up (well, that one Aliens game did in PS1 but nobody remembers that) and a decent campaign with vehicles and physics. Once CoD started making ground on the consoles with CoD4 with its fast action gameplay yet solid multiplayer, it was no longer exceptional.
