I think a simpler explanation is that the titles have gotten simpler. Awakening, Fates, "Echoes," Three Houses, Engage. Four of them are a single word. Echoes is technically not the subtitle of FE15, it's more accurately "Shadows of Valentia" or maybe both combined. But people call it Echoes because it's easier. Three Houses is abbreviated 3H, so the problem of multiple words is solved elegantly.

Compare this with Genealogy of the Holy War (mouthful), Binding Blade/Blazing Blade (BB...?), Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. You can abbreviate other long titles like PoR and people unambiguously understand what you're referring to, but who wants to remember what GotHW's retarded acronym is every every time they want to talk about it? Easier to just write "FE4."
