I was using Linux once, back at uni. ONCE. Everything I had to use required tweaking with Wine and usually barely worked anyway, most printers wouldn't work, USB ports would randomly reset (and nobody, NOBODY on various boards and such had no idea why or how to fix that, despite numerous people reporting it and trying), 90% of open source alternatives to whatever I required was complete and utter shit and many more. Gaming usually works perfectly fine. Heck even with mods. Tried an old VN, Stardew (with mods), Retroarch and more. You prob wont be able to play many western MP AAA slop though (why dont you boycott these anyways?) If you rely on Sai2 or Photoshop, give it up (unless youre a VM wizard with a comp that can withstand it for long hours daily). Theres alternatives, but for many thats like telling someone to learn a whole new skillset. Sai/Sai2 is the lightest of all drawing softwares. Super simple and effective. I tried to "Wine" it into Linux Mint but while it works it has a lot of hickups. Photoshop is completely un-useable. BTW... For many art programs, even Aseprite... On L.M. the thumbnails arent the program's icons by default there (wtf). Like instead of the block icon for .aseprite icons its like a transparent PNG. Bit weird.


My best tip would be to dual boot: 2 diff drives or 4 drives (1 per OS + 1 storage drive for each). Youll run into a lot of headaches trying to make it work (so Windows doesnt "takeover" the Linux Boot order) if youre not too computer savy, but its worth it and youll learn. The same way you tell people making a game in RPGMaker: DONT consider your first project "THE GAME." Accept that its a dummy/test where youll pile up lots of mistakes. Thats okay, "hopping distros" or resetting the OS is easy. :) So its okay to make mistakes, youll learn. You can also try L.M. from a USB (called LIVE environment) but its not "the true experience" as youll feel a little bit of lag/some stuff wont work.


Ifranview & Foobar works. For MPC-HC youll need the QT vers. Nemo's file explorer doesnt natively show a folder's content in its icon. Not efficient... Mint is great! But theres drawbacks too... As an artist ill be permanently stucked between w10/L.Mint. Try it yourself anon. But keep a foot in w10 just in case.

Been using 7 up until 2024 due to needing a new PC. You'll be stuck with every piece of software, to browsers, to even certain websites nagging constantly that you to update either the software(which you can't do since a lot of software cut off 7 support) or windows and will outright block you. It was nice staying on 1 version of a piece of software and never have to worry about annoying updates every 5 minutes since shit just works but over the years its gotten way more annoying just trying to find workarounds. Security isn't even a big concern or any concern at all. You have to fiddle with shit or dig through archives for older w7 final support version more than you due with modern windows and linux.

Just use Linux like the other anon mentioned. If it was a few years earlier I would say 7 is still fine but these days, its just not worth the effort. Better compatability with older DX9 and before era games, almost always a gain. DX8 doujin games from early 2000s just work through lutris while they tend to choke elsewhere.

Distro maintainers package stuff. The developer doesn't have to bother with it. If your shitware isn't important enough to be packaged all that is expected of you is to provide an Appimage which is exactly the same as an executable on Windows. Proton barely has any performance hit and Linux has a much better scheduler than Windows even before considering Windows bloat. CPU bound titles will perform better.
Where it gets tricky is the GPU side. Nvidia takes a ~25% hit in DX12 games because vkd3d uses a vulkan extension or does something nvidia driver failed to implement or doesn't like. It's not strictly a Linux thing, it also happens on Windows it's just that on Windows it's unnecessary to do this in the first place. Nvidia acknowledged this and is working on a fix.
This doesn't happen on AMD due to the nature of open source drivers. But if you're on RDNA4 like the 9070 XT, ray tracing is faster on the Windows driver still.
So in general Linux performs better but there are cases where Windows is faster like DX12 on nvidia and ray traced games. So if you're on a 5090 and want to raytracemaxx then it's advisable to stay on Windows.

I'm always tempted to go back to Mint.
There's always those fucking little things that I really can't be fucked dualbooting for though.
