If you read Ask Iwata, it's said Miyamoto even in the NES era if he'd have a clever idea and a prototype was made, he'd take them to a Nintendo employee who isn't involved in the game or hadn't previous played it to playtest.
Then if the employee didn't understand the game, he'd see that as a personal failure and he'd redo the game or mechanic to be better geared to be understood/enjoyable. They're products because there's an iterative approach to feedback and improvement which makes them product.
Whereas a piece of art is something that is made a very certain way based on the creators feelings and isn't adapted to feedback whether a consumer understands it or not. You don't playtest and adjust art based on the viewers thoughts or their ability to understand it.
