I know it's very archaic compared to pretty much everything that came after it, but I still love Maniac Mansion. It's more open-ended design and alternate story paths from playing different characters was really ambitious and something rarely attempted by other adventure games. Even Day of Tentacle is nothing like it despite being a sequel. Though I still can't deny that the Indiana Jones adventure games topped Maniac Mansion in how they handle alternate paths. Those are a close second I think.

It is possible (though not simple) to run the NES version in scummvm for mouse and keyboard support. Though unless you really need the music, you should just play the DOS v2 version. It's got updated graphics and it goes without saying that it has none of the censorship the NES version has.

This exact screen is the moment I dropped Monkey Island forever when I finally gave up and looked up the guide and saw the way in to the temple was a pixel hunt on one of the pillars which actually had a hidden lever sticking out of it. I was so angry and offended that it was the solution I refused to continue playing after that point and I'd laboriously made it that far on my own too

sometimes adventure game puzzles have the opposite problem of moon logic, the game normally swatting away any solution that's the slightest bit sloppy or requiring brute force but then for one puzzle it makes an exception where a highly impractical but technically possible solution is fine, close enough. the infuriating thing will be that you're likely to immediately consider the solution but then not even bother attempting it because you know the game would never recognize something that's even slightly a reach.

Oh my GOD!!
I looked for a game for two days straight, no luck, all tags, all genres, everything and I couldn't find the god damn game I forgot the name.
Until you post this one that has an art style very similar to it, went to the developers website and I finally found it. Thanks, anon.

I did not like this series, all the journals you find are written by psychos who are crazy for no reason.
I played the first two and the stories were just so.. insane, and not the good kind of insane, just hortible for no reason.

I overall prefer the sequel, but just look at that fucking cover art.
First game has a lot more somber atmosphere and traversal through the beautiful pixelart world.
Sequel is a lot more direct with more different settings, edgy jokes, and memorable characters. Ending kinda sucked, but I don't really mind. I miss the beautiful pixel art in modern games.

I wish they'd make a third one in the pixel style, but instead we got that horrible 3D PS1 slop and a german like fan reboot that will 100% miss the point like those two Larry games.

I got bored with "the longest journey."

I think the reason was the female protagonist,
and that I learned that in the sequels characters verbally say to be homosexual and they repeat it.

The second, while having great aesthetics, is pretty much the trope incarnated when it comes to pixelhunting and crazy combination of item usages, but it's kind part of the charm.
What really baffles me is that there were two more games after the abomination that was the third. Never even looked at any gameplay since the style just looked uncanny to me from the screenshots I've seen.

Also while looking for the cover and gameplay footage, I was bombarded with a prequel game releasing in two days. While they at least moved away from 3D, it still looks kinda meh. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1939890/Simon_the_Sorcerer_Origins/

Try to imagine what it's like writing a mystery story that has to be solvable and has to be solved at the right time, so that no player doesn't figure it out too soon and no player is too late with the solution. It's near impossible to do consistently, you'll probably only solve a case at the perfect moment once or twice per AA game
