Adjusting sandbox settings is not enough to offset this, I want rewarding exploration and rewarding combat. Which is another point of failure. The devs don't seem very fond of gun combat, which should be the standard for late game.

More features != an improved game. Devs adding sheet backpacks and weapon blacksmithing circumvent the need to find these items in the world (i.e. finding a bag, finding a machete as a rare drop). This deemphasizes looting and exploration, which were always the gameplay core of Zomboid, and instead incentivizes watching green bars fill and grinding the new skills (alongside existing ones like Carpentry to make rain collectors before the water shutoff). "Just don't engage with the new mechanics" is a weak solution, and I shouldn't have to ignore intended mechanics to make the game fun and balanced.

Not all the additions are bad, but the ones I've mentioned add little more than bloat and tedium. They don't introduce unique items as much as they add new, unnecessary ways to craft existing ones. I don't buy that the new systems don't shift focus away from scavenging and onto rural, off-the-grid living, since these additions are catered to little else besides an innawoods playstyle, which is something most players don't go for and don't enjoy. Shifting the game's focus onto survival-crafting alienates fans who want the long-standing looting and combat systems to be improved. It's okay if the devs wish to expand on this primal, self-sufficient playstyle; it's just that it isn't and has never been the main way to play, and that main way to play is currently being neglected. Given how underbaked Zomboid's late-game is, pottery, masonry and blacksmithing are far from what the devs should be focusing on. "Just ignore it" will always be a cop out because it shifts the onus onto the player to not engage with intended mechanics and to make the game fun for themselves.

once you have cleared out a space for yourself, set up farmland and have a source of clean water there is zero reason to venture out and risk yourself instead of waiting out the zombie apocalypse
ten thousand zombies aren't suddenly going to mob this one single house in the middle of nowhere that may or may not have a single human inside
the game just falls apart after 30min which is why they're needlessly complicating it so you can't just act like how any other smart person would in such a scenario

One of the biggest never evers to have ever nevered. PZ just needs simple and robust AI without all the goofy Sims tier simulation frills. Friendlies, enemies, and a few tiers in between. Give them little personality/traits/agenda descriptors like in Mount and Blade so some interesting things could happen. Remove tedious clunky shit. Add like a weightless toolbelt that you can add hand tools to as you find them. Its retarded that you have to waste several minutes wandering around you base looking in your storage containers for any given tool whenever you arbitrarily need it.
Also make player built shit invulnerable by default. You can already make an impervious base by simply putting it above the ground floor and destroying any stairs that lead to it. So from a balance point of view, that shit already exists. All zombies being able to destroy your shit accomplishes is destroying any reason to actually build a cool base rather than just take over the second floor of a building.

Have some of them get into small fights and arguments, grappling and growling and shoving until they inevitably forget about it and give up. Maybe have a small chance for one to kill the other
Make zombies occasionally groan incoherent words and sentence fragments at eachother.
In Louisville add the gentle roar of a distant crowd to the ambience. Make it clear you're in an infested city with 40,000 (realistically 600,000) zombies. Maybe have it rise and fall with the time of day to make it a little more unnerving and less annoying.

Okay, I closed all the curtains and I'm standing in the corner of a house eating food and doing nothing. I win.
The game being a survival game with the idea of "You'll die, its just a matter of when" isn't a very fulfilling premise it feels like. Get tagged by a Zombie, run over.
What I think they should do is have events that progress and change things up, maybe Zombies don't respawn and instead new ones drift in, give you the feeling of actually clearing them out, have bandits start showing up after a while, and eventually military. Give something for the player to actually prepare for and get through. The game being designed around the whole "this is how you died" thing, while being grindy as fuck with all these skill levels is nonsense. If your character actually gets eaten or something, sure, but from the virus? Why not make it so you can actually beat the virus if you consume enough medication and treat the wound very well? Make it so when you get bit, your character now has something they have to fight for, a race against time to scavenge the stuff you need and make some risky moves for because its over if they don't.
Project Zomboid feels like its just a sandbox of Zombie related game ideas/concepts and not a fully focused game.

The obvious: NPCs, factions, quests.
But even more importantly, shift focus from basic bitch zombies (that went stale by 2010) to more mystical and/or sci-fi stuff, darkwood/cdda style.
Add proper events: A military raid occurs to retrieve the contents of a downed chopper.
Strange bullshit like one day all zombies around just gather in a huge circle and stand there laughing/crying, completely ignoring the player, then proceeding to kill and devour each other. Something withers all plant life around Muldraugh, trees are now covered in strange rust, nothing grows on your farm so you have to migrate or starve.
I would focus on things like these, instead of pottery and knitting.
