The one who truly got it right was Peter Moore at EA saying over 10 years ago that the industry is going to shift towards f2p products and that paid games will die. The budgets didn't inflate to the insane values they're currently at until the COVID bubble injected a lot of extra cash into gaming. Witcher 3 was made on a budget of $35 million and The Last of Us was at $20 million. BotW was an $100 million game in comparison while God of War 2018 was $44 million. BotW was legitimately a AAA game at release and Odyssey had a similar budget.

But that was after Nintendo had already swapped gears after the Gamecube because Sony and Microsoft were buying up all the exclusives. Nintendo tried to do the same with some games like RE4 but it didn't work. It's funny though, isn't it? Nintendo were unironically the ones putting out AAA games at the start of the Switch because it was make or break for them, that's why you'll see people talk up the first few years of the Switch so much. Valve's attempt is unlikely to solve the issue with PC gaming which is lack of pressure towards publishers to push a functioning product. All PS5 games can be guaranteed to work on a PS5, but every future Steam game is not guaranteed to work on a Steam Machine 2. If the system requires turbonormalfags to do research if X game works then they've already lost the customer. I also genuinely doubt Valve is willing to sell the system at a loss to deliver PS5 like graphics with what is essentially a prebuilt.

Many of the big Switch 1 games had AAA budgets at the time they were released. Smash Ultimate is another $100 million game. Spiderman for PS4 only had a $90 million budget. Nintendo were the ones legitimately making AAA games at the start of the Switch and spending more than Sony and Microsoft were on their games. Nintendo did it for certain big evergreen titles instead of every game like Sony and Microsoft tried to do and Sony and Microsoft started investing way more into their games to the point where $100 million now seems like chump change but at the time, Nintendo were putting on the big budget games over everyone else.

You might actually be able to attribute the initial momentum of the Switch to that because those games were high quality and each one of them was a system seller. That's the "Nintendo magic".

The Spiderman 1 remaster cost nearly $40 million and that was a straight up remaster without new content or systems like TotK had, I'm not sure if these game companies are straight up laundering money now but I do believe costs can be higher for the newer games even if they're reusing things from previous games. Spider man 2 reused parts of Spider man 1s map too and that game was $315 million somehow.
