3 is the best one for many reasons.

The story going on in the background is interesting.
You have the best customization in your party members and can change their class as much as you want, it reverts them back to level 1 but you keep half of your stats meaning you can have tanks if you wish.
The world is large and fun to explore and when you think its over you get to explore another large world.
The final boss is the best in the series for the music alone.

If you enjoy having fun, 3 is the way to go, if you want the best story you wanna play Dragon Quest 5, if you want the best story with your party members play 11.

Difficulty. Atmosphere. The holistic nature of the experience by undermining its own decisions at every turn. DQ1 works really well as a sort of puzzle box. The surrounding areas to the castle are extremely low level, and get more difficult the further out you go. And because all battles are one-on-one, you need to intimately know which encounters you are able to handle, who you can outspeed, what their damage values are, etc. It also creates a push-your-luck mini game where you are trying to see how far you can get before dying or you risk losing half of your gold, which in the NES version was a huge deal cause you didn't make buttfuck money until right before the final area of the game, and all the best stuff is in there anyways.

Even just looking at the trailers, I can see them inserting things into the game that ultimately disrupt that flow and casualize the experience. Like they are apologizing for making the Mona Lisa because people these days prefer men in their paintings, so they give you give you AR glasses that impose a mustache and adam's apple while you look at the painting instead of standing by it.

I'm not that anon, and I'm buying it anyways, but I'm doing so with the explicit understanding that I will probably never love this game and it's riding on the good will built up by its legacy.
