The only hard one was the reverse 180 and even that only took a few tries.

i figured out how to skip the tutorial by editing the mission scripts
i considered that a pass because i was only 10 at the time

The trouble I had was not knowing what the hell a slalom was and not having a manual to consult because the game was rented.

I remember renting this from Blockbuster as a kid and I couldn't get out of the tutorial because I didn't know what most of those words meant

The biggest problem here is knowing what a slalom is. Slalom is a skiing maneuver. The rest of the world just calls it zig-zag.

I have an excuse! My graphics card didn't support hardware T&L, that parking garage was almost completely pitch black.

oh yeah, I might be misremembering it being a video in the menu after waiting for a bit, but there definitely was a ghost car thing like you said or a video that also showed the button prompts, I would not have figured it out as a kid without that video.

in hindsight they tried really hard to make it as understandable as possible, with the training mode, a ghost car, a full in-game movie with a demo car doing it for you, with buttons on the screen and the checklist checking off the moves as they're demonstrated, so at least someone acknowledged that it really was too hard.

the difficulty issue could have been solved by splitting each of the moves up into something akin to crazy taxi's crazy box, where you go in to 1 level at a time and basically get to practice the shit out of that one individual move the whole time.

the problem was this scene was emulating a scene from a movie. not shot for shot, but certain elements from it, and they didn't want to stray too far from that vision, so breaking up the action wasn't an option.

very true, it's cool that they were emulating the famous scene and it really does make for a great opening, but it's definitely too confusing if you just jump right into it.
I feel like them putting some sort of a disclaimer at the start saying "we really urge you to go through the training before attempting the first mission" could have alleviated the problem a bit, but then again they did mention it in the manual and game design like that really wasn't a thing back then.

my dad got this for me at a pawnshop when i was bout 8. i made it past the tutorial with no manual somehow. i dont remember much else other than driving around aimlessly trying to obey traffic lights and speed limits while dodging cops
