I think addiction is more of a habit thing than it is a neurochemical dependency thing.
I think non-druggies conceptualize druggies as being hopelessly enthralled to a substance that hard rewires all their brain chemistry and just turns them into a zombie that roams around and seeks out more drugs.
But addiction is more a problem of having unshakeable routines. Every time you're in a certain part of town, you think about the fact that your dealer lives nearby, so you hit him up for drugs automatically because that's just what you always do when you get that stimulus. This is why druggies usually have to take up new bad activities/ habits like smoking weed all day every day or obsessively playing video games in order to kick the even worse habit of smoking crack.
If it doesn't become a habit, I don't think you get the addiction ultimately.

People who get addicted to hard drugs CAN handle them, until they can't, but that takes a long time. That's what being addicted is. If you couldn't "handle it", you'd freak out the first time you tried meth and never do it again. That's not a bad thing, it's just tragic that people who get addicted are healthy and smart.

I was in medication for years due to depression and had to come off of it earlier this year due to a side effect from being on it for years (obesity)
This made me depressed. So I tried weed earlier this april after coming off of my medication because “fuck big pharma man” and I quit it in august. I’m back on my medication now and in a gym membership to keep the weight off. I never want to touch weed again. It felt okay for a while, but after a few weeks it made me super fucking paranoid. Like, “The CIA is surveilling my every move via satellite and Al Qaeda and ISIS are spying on me via Windows exploits” levels of paranoid. Why did this happen? Is it autism? Does cannabis clash with neurodivergent brains?
