I think addiction is more of a habit thing than it is a neurochemical dependency thing.
I think non-druggies conceptualize druggies as being hopelessly enthralled to a substance that hard rewires all their brain chemistry and just turns them into a zombie that roams around and seeks out more drugs.
But addiction is more a problem of having unshakeable routines. Every time you're in a certain part of town, you think about the fact that your dealer lives nearby, so you hit him up for drugs automatically because that's just what you always do when you get that stimulus. This is why druggies usually have to take up new bad activities/ habits like smoking weed all day every day or obsessively playing video games in order to kick the even worse habit of smoking crack.
If it doesn't become a habit, I don't think you get the addiction ultimately.
