People say Helltaker was carried by it's cast, but I'd say it's specifically having the cast interact with each other. Awaria has cutscenes too, but a couple of lines with no reply don't give you much to flesh out characters with.
I you just kept the talk button and gave the ghosts more colours than a single shade of green it would have been way more sucessful.
