It can't. Read the full patent. They only patented the let's go mode in Scarlet and Violet. Basically the patent is for summon a creature that will engage in a player controlled battle with the target if you throw the creature at the target on sending it out, or will path around and autobattle otherwise and collect items for the player. It is very specific to Pokemon.

Copyrights are or IP; they're for art. Code isn't art. As for your spreadsheet example, Apple nor IBM would have been able to patent a spreadsheet because spreadsheets have existed for thousands of years. They COULD patent a software implementation of it, but there are so many ways to code a spreadsheet it wouldn't really top competitors from making their own. At best maybe they could patent a storage or compression algorithm to make their spreadsheet more efficient for 20 years , but even that would be pointless because tech was advancing so fast back in the 70s and 80s that anything the invented was out of date the next year. There would be no reason to preserve it for 20.
