Fun fact: The Dreamcast anti-piracy is still uncracked to this day. Circumventing it with the MIL-CD exploit was so good it just wasn't worth figuring it out. The last few DC's made don't support MIL-CDs, shitty models.

The House of the Dead 2: great port of the Model 3 arcade game. But Sega never released any official light guns, and left that up to third parties like MadCatz.
Soul Calibur : Enhanced port of the arcade game. Arguably better.
Blue Stinger : Weird attempt at a survival horror game.
Power Stone : Capcom's 'Smash Bros." but with 3D arenas.
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing : Midway's attempt to make a Punch Out! clone. Not bed. This game was really made for the Dreamcast and ported to other platforms later. So it is the best version of the game.
Virtua Fighter 3: TB : OK port of the Model 3 game. But doesn't look as good.
Sega Rally 2: This is a botched port that uses WindowsCE, the frame rate jumps between 30-60fps during gameplay. But the game does include a lot of bonus tracks, cars and modes not seen in the arcade. The Windows port is identical but runs at a better frame rate. This game play better in emulation, given that you can run it at a locked 60fps.
Hydro Thunder : really good port of the arcade game. But the N64 port has 4-player split screen.
Sonic Adventure : A game that I love and hate. I love the level designs, and the HUB world. I don;t like the controls and the slightly busted camera. The game needed some additional QA to work out its' issues. Which are mostly just technical.
Dynamite Cop : Technically a sequel to Die Hard Arcade without the Die Hard license. Better than the arcade version. Fun but shallow beat 'em up.

The Dreamcast's failure was more from years of Sega's bad decisions that led to general consumer distrust, rather than the DC being bad itself. The Saturn was a flop outside of Japan, the 32x was a massive flop everywhere, and it became clear Sega was more interested in selling consoles quickly then abandoning them ASAP. Them fumbling that hard while the PS1 quickly took the overwhelming market share and developer trust was a deathblow. There was no way for the Dreamcast to ever succeed no matter how many games were on it, people simply didn't trust Sega anymore.

Add in the PS2 coming out in a year and it was over before it even began.

When I played the Sonic Adventure demo on a kiosk, I was blown away and had to get a Dreamcast and I played tons of awesome games on it but the games Dreamcast got were weird and obscure compared to what the N64 and Playstation were getting in regard to brand names. The demo discs did a lot of heavy lifting for me to figure out which more obscure games I'd want to buy.

Delaying DC for an entire year for a meme release date was a terrible idea as was selling every US unit at a loss. Should have supported the saturn to have some cash flow from console gaming even if small, better than nothing. Please have some respect for Isao Okawa. Dreamcast wasn't bundling a year of broadband internet with copies of PSO because it was doing that poorly (although, it was.) That promotion was funded by Okawa personally because he genuinely believed that playing video games with others over broadband internet was the future of the industry, it's why he also pushed for the Dreamcast to have a built-in modem and basically forced Sonic Team at gun point to make PSO to begin with. Sega's downfall was well warranted, but understand the context as to why Sega ran such a promo, who paid for it, and why it happened. Okawa honestly doesn't get enough credit in the industry as it is for how much of a visionary he truly was.

Burning games was as easy has having a newish computer, a sleeve of cd and going to your local video rental store. So 3rd party devs didn't want to develop for it.

Sega brand had been eroded over the last few years with all the Sega/cd and Sega Saturn.

PlayStation had also replaced Sega as the main competitor against Nintendo. So they had more 3 party developers working on their hardware. This is before the modern times where everything runs games on Directx so porting for different consoles was slower and multi-platforms releases was less of an option.

It was almost a 1/2 generation because of how under powered compared to just the ps2 let alone the xbox.

By the time the Xbox/GameCube came the PS2 had like 100 game library or something that. The Dreamcast had very small library by the time the PS2 launched.

All of these were factions in the Dreamcast failure.

People always misunderstand the 6th gen console wars period. There's no right or wrong... good or bad... Sega, Microsoft, and Nintendo all gave their best and pushed their limits. It's just that the Playstation WAS JUST TOO BIG and TOO GOOD.

No, it was known to be a shitty launch lineup even at the time. PS1 at least had Rayman, Ridge Racer and Toshinden to sell the console right off the bat and in the US at least got Tekken just after release.

Had Rogue Squadron, THPS3, Madden (normalfag game) and Super Monkey Ball right at launch. Within a month it also had Pikmin, Melee and SSX Tricky about a month later. Within about 6 months of release you can also add Sonic Adventure 2, REmake and Bloody Roar. Not all of them were system sellers but that's still a fairly solid lineup and I say that as someone who overally dislikes the Gamecube and thinks it's a pretty bad console and Nintendo's nadir. It took the PS2 a year to get anywhere near that strong.

I was a Sega kid and I actually got Dreamcast near its launch. I had Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Ready 2 Rumble, and Sonic Adventure. Out of those, Soul Calibur Dreamcast was by far the best game (and my favorite Soul Calibur title, had the BEST version of Lizardman) while I barely remember R2R. All I remember was laughing at the afros.

I remember liking Power Stone for what it was, but I also remember getting bored of it fairly quickly. It was a neat concept but no real staying power. Sonic Adventure has always been a disappointment to me. I was underwhelmed by the first, but I beat it and the sequel before giving up on Sonic forever, to this day.

I thought I also had Crazy Taxi but I guess that wasn't exclusive? Also a really fun game. My favorite game on the Dreamcast before it died was Skies of Arcadia.

Looking back, it's funny that so many of DCs decent launch titles were fighting or racing games. And then the rest were shooters or Sonic.

Fun fact: piracy wasn't feasible until 2000, when Sega already had planned to kill the system. And even then it wasn't until autumn 2000 you had self-booting games. You still had to download games on dail-up that took hours, burn games precisely, and some games still had to be compressed to fit on a CD (later games like SA2 especially).

Conversely, Sega prior to the Dreamcast release almost merged with Bandai, fired 1/3rd of their workforce by 1999, they had a major lawsuit with 3DFX over terminating their design proposal for the system, and were about to face another lawsuit for abusing their in-house employees with overwork. All of which were gimped on Gay Cube either in visuals (Xbox/PC versions were superior) or controls (cube controller has less buttons). With Splinter Cell and Hitman, by the time of Pandora Tomorrow and Contracts, those franchises dropped Nintendo. Cube third party support was a promise to make up for the drought of games on N64 and by 2004 it was the same problem all over again.
