Just got the Metal Gear Master Collection. Should I pay the original NES games or should I jump straight into the first Metal Gear Solid?

Emulate Metal Gear Solid 1 on Duckstation
Apply the MGSHD fix to 2 & 3

Play Metal Gear 1 & 2 (MSX) afterwards as a curiosity. Don't play the NES games.

the oldies can be very frustrating. Only play them if you have the patience for it. In any case only Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake has a connection to the rest.

Jump straight into MGS1.
If you're playing on PC then don't play the Master collection version of MGS1, play it on duckstation instead.

MGS1 is just Metal Gear 2 with more cutscenes and handholding. Crazy how much a western release and presentation can affect perception.

Ok so what I'm getting is to not play the original 8 bit games and instead go into emulating the original PlayStation games with patches. What's wrong with the master collection version? Just curious

>call it Vol1 implying there will be more
>refuse to elaborate
>never release Vol 2 ever
Why is Konami like this?

Metal Gear MSX is kind of shit but it's a quick playthrough. Metal Gear 2 was shockingly great. I recommend it.

MG1 can be beaten in less than an hour.

You probably meant to say "the MSX originals", no?
The NES port of MG1 is notoriously awful, and MG2:SS was never released on NES at all.

But the answer is: up to you.
If you can stomach some TRUE Retro, then MG1-2 are worth checking out. Especially MG2:SS is a truly great game, and a proper proto-MGS in every conceivable manner.

But if you are at all unsure, and want to bite the juiciest part of the franchise right off the bat, then Metal Gear Solid 1 is the game to start with.
It's still the corner stone of the series' overarching plot, and a great self-contained tale with iconic characters, settings and atmosphere.

MGS1 also has text summaries of MG1 and 2 in its main menu, which you can read first.
I'd also check the "Briefing Files" and try the "VR Training" before jumping into the campaign itself. The former's essentially a set of videos that flesh out the backstory more, where as VR training's a set of tutorial / challenge missions that teach you the basic mechanics. The main game itself won't hold your hand, typical to 1990s' games in general, so reading through the Manual + VR training is the way to go.

Vol 1 dropped in March 2023, almost 3 years ago.
It's obvious that the shitty MGS Delta and its Battle Royale online mode sapped most of their resources.

If you want to play the originals as they should, they come included in MGS3

MSX games, the NES games are inferior ports. And yes, play the MSX games first, especially because Metal Gear Solid 1 has a lot of references to Metal Gear 2. MG2 is also a very solid game.

Ok lots of opinions on the 8 bit games. I'll check them out just for fun. If I get frustrated I'll just go into emulating the first Metal Gear Solid. I also didn't realize the games were on the MSX, which I've never even heard of. It's cool to learn about retro gaming history

one additional, albeit unpopular, opinion
I dont know if it's on the collection, but Snake's Revenge is actually pretty good
it's non-canon but worth a play

The MC version of MGS1 is inferior all around to Duckstation. It's locked to 240p and has controller issues.

Metal Gear 1 is relatively simple. A couple of tips about that game is that enemies only have a straight line of sight, so you can literally stand next to them and they won't see you unless you're directly in front of them. Also on the prison where there are guard dogs, there are various hidden walls you have to punch to detect and can be broken either by punching or by using C4s, this is extra important because there are some progression items hidden there and you only find out if you speak with a specific NPC through codec.

Metal Gear 2 is the first game but improved tenfold and both games are directly linked to Solid 1, so I highly recommend playing them.

Play MG1 with a guide
It suffers from that old game kind of jank but is kinda charming in the same way.
Try MG2 without
Its a very good game and basically a 2d version of MGS1

MSX was indeed a Japan-only personal computer platform, kinda similar to Commodore and Amiga here in the West.

The NES port of MG1 was made without Kojima's nor Konami's input, and the NES-only unofficial sequel, "Snake's Revenge", actually made Kojima so mad, that he ended up making the OFFICIAL sequel, MG2: Solid Snake.
