Guys, I’m just tired of this. For more than a month now, I’ve been trying to help modders by contributing my talents to complement their creations. I’m a 3D artist. I know how to make models and textures for games, and I want to help people for free! But every time I offer my help to someone, they immediately start looking at me with suspicion. They call me a scammer, or even demand money from me for helping with their mods! It’s just silly, because I don’t even ask them to link my portfolio or credit me anywhere. I honestly don’t understand people nowadays. Has our society really lost even the most basic level of trust? Why does everyone instantly assume that someone is trying to scam them in every situation? It feels like paranoia... What would you suggest I do? Thanks for reading this and have a great day! : )

how young are you? shouldve learned in your teens not to offer help to people who dont need it, instead go find a decent project which actually looks for help

I'm 28. And I recently decided to start doing this because I love games and I love sharing my skills with people. I’ve been like that since I was a kid whenever I have something to be happy about or a skill I can offer, I always want to share it with others. That’s just the kind of person I am… You can laugh at me if you want, for wanting to help people who don’t even think they need help.
But honestly, they would really benefit from it! The modders I’ve been lucky enough to work with told me they didn’t expect that kind of help, and that it was amazing to meet someone like me. But most others just call me a scammer and block me everywhere. They actually think I want to infect them with a virus, steal their money or personal data, or hack them God knows what else...
It truly hurts me, because I don’t want any of that.
I just want to help and share what I can. :(

No, I’m not trying to seek approval. You’re being really rude. If I wanted to, I could write something like: “People are awful, I’m so good, everyone around me is morally corrupt and despicable! Look how pure and perfect I am compared to them…”

The Clippy image is kind of a protest against corporate control over consumers. Clippy was an annoying Microsoft feature, but this cute little paperclip just wanted to help. It never tried to steal your personal data when you were feeling down or in pain to sell it to advertisers, it never tried to spy on you, and so on. That’s why this cute little paperclip became a symbol of the fight for consumer freedom. And the person who started this movement is Louis Rossmann

Usually, modders don’t worry about copyright as far as I know, lol, but there’s some sense in what you’re saying. Probably posting my models on sites like Sketchfab is the only thing left for me to do, lol xD

Once, I tried to create a whole repository of models for the modding community on Source in Discord. At first, people even liked it. The server owner himself used my models in his projects. But after a while, he started publicly criticizing my work, putting it on display for everyone to ridicule. They started calling me incompetent and clumsy. I decided to leave. It wasn’t the most pleasant experience of altruism in my life

Here, I made this hammer for one moderator, for his mod Mystic Class in the game Baldur's Gate 3. There are also many more of my models there. I really enjoyed working with that guy :)

It depends on the modding community but your best bet is to make a bunch of varied free resources for modders to use to build yourself a portfolio, so to speak
Once you've established your reputation as someone with those skills, people will start to come to you.
Start out simple. Think of something that the game itself lacks but you think people would use. Background clutter, animals, items, the sky is the limit.

Ok, since it looks like you're making Baldur's Gate 3 stuff, I would recommend you to make a pack of "cool" and edgy weapons and maybe some armor and release it as a resource pack

Do you think I should make this resource pack as a ready-to-use mod, or would it be enough to just create the models and textures ready for use in the game engine by the modders themselves? Make a bunch of models with the same theme and sell them on Unity/Unreal/Other asset markets

I'm not too sure on how modding for that specific game works (I am mostly a elder scrolls modder), but I think just having the models and textures in the right format for the game for modders to add themselves in whatever way they'd like should be good.

How did you learn modelling? Did you do flash or any 2d work prior?

Can you recommend some platforms where I could upload such resource packs? I’ve already been banned from the official Baldur’s Gate Discord community, and even if I weren’t, apparently such things aren’t allowed there. By the way, I once made some models for Skyrim :)) Check this out super fast arrows flying at bullet speed, and a knife from the movie Scream that hits really fast and regenerates your HP

I’ve been interested in 3D graphics for as long as I can remember… It’s probably one of the ways I express myself, to keep my head from exploding xD. I think you’re exaggerating a bit. 3D modeling isn’t for everyone, but anyone can learn it to a certain level. Believe me, I struggle with ADHD, and I managed it so you can too XD!

It's really not intuitive to make good 3d stuff. Using a camera and then modeling the 4 planes is straightforward but anything other than that is sculpting and therefore art to me.

I am like you only I invested into audio , some drawing and a bit of programming. I am just average in all of those areas but it's plenty fun.

Actually, you’re thinking in a very good direction. You’re right that making a 3D object look beautiful is an art. BUT. This can be learned. You need to learn how to work with shape and volume so that the model is appealing and its parts are properly scaled. Train your brain to generate different form options on its own, and the only way to do that is through practice in modeling. It’s all achievable.
But if you just need to make models that don’t aim to be works of art, you can learn that without any problem, man, believe me. Just find a structured set of guides that explains everything step by step, so you don’t get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information

Yeah doing placeholder 3d models is easy enough when you go to simpler shapes and just add them together.
I can't stay stuck on details from the start but it's hard to do anything else when it's that bare bones what I do and I don't feel to good when the process is slow and hard.

I have never had a good experience interacting with modders, which I wouldn't of ever done in the first place. But its become trendy to wall mods behind a labyrinthine discord ego server full of retards and sycophants. Trying to broker favor with these people by helping them is an enormously bad idea. It isn't as if you're missing out on anything by ignoring their existence entirely and just making air dropped contributions with no more interaction than a 'here you go have fun with it faggots.' What are you gonna do? Have water cooler chats with them about the stupid shit they're into besides the game you're all modding? I'd rather engage in urethral sounding personally.

OMG, guys. You just made my day. xD And, you’re right. I’ve never looked at it from that perspective… I’ll do exactly that. I’ll just upload my resource packs on Nexus. I’ll create a Facebook account and maybe somewhere else, or even try to make my own website to showcase my work.
