I’m currently making a single player card game by myself but the card system is more like yugioh than pokemon. It still has the same plot of getting 8 badges and facing the elite 4 but there is a calendar with a day night cycle. There is more focus on the town exploration like you can go to the fast food restaurant and get a card pack when you buy a happy meal. There are weekend locals at the card shop. When a new pack comes out in-game after you beat 3 gym leaders there is a midnight release you attend and play a draft mode. I’m currently working on the monthly tournament where you fight random decks with increased difficulty to become the monthly champion.

It's such a fucking shame that spinoffs like this can't exist anymore because it's wildly more profitable to be a shitty gacha game instead like Pocket TCG. I would love a fan recreation of this game but incorporates actual card scans, true RNG, and making some of the complicated cards that were cut like Fossil Ditto and Base Electrode, actually workable.

Most of them try to hard to be challenging where pokemon tcg hits the sweet spot of every npc is super awful at both the game and deckbuilding so you have free reign to do whatever you want and even make an impractical deck yourself because it won't get hard countered by the meta staples that shut down every deck because nobody is using them
Anonymous No.724596229 [Report] >>724621756
A single player tcg rpg has always been something I've thought would be really cool.
>game opens with the player at 10 years old at Walmart with parents
>get to pick a starter deck as a present
>gameplay involves battling other kids on the playground
>mini-games where you do chores around the house to earn a pack from Mom and Dad
>towards the end of this section people to battle will get less and less numerous
>final section it's just you with your deck and everyone else has moved on
>pick up 5 years later in high school
>one day walking with friends you notice a card shop that recently opened
>big ad for the game in the window
>decide to get back into it
>this section you go to locals every week and every month is a big tournament
>include prerelease events for new sets every few months
>mini games where you work part time jobs to fund your hobby
>section ends with the MC graduating high school and attending his first pro event
>final section picks up 3 years later
>MC is a full on pro at the game but not super successful
>arc is basically just tournament grinding trying to become world champion

Throw in some story elements throughout, maybe a cute girl to have a romance arc with, I think it'd be pretty cool provided the actual card game was good.

Honestly a lot better than you'd think. Plus I believe it's a sequel to a Japanese game that was far more bare bones. Best of all, you can turn off and on animations pretty easily in the middle of a fight, in case you just want to grind or you want to see the animations.

If you really like Pokemon TGC you should play MTG Shandalar (heard it had a new version in the Forge engine) and Thronebraker: The Witcher Tales.
I consider those 3 the holy trilogy of single-player TGC games.

Just replayed it a few months ago. Fantastic game.
>beautiful sprite work
>grinding grunts for packs extends gameplay, but each fight feels different unlike random encounters in normal Pokemon
>experimenting with decks is fun (though tedious, since you need to use the machines to remake your decks rather than just use the same cards in different decks)
>Pokemon game with the highest potential for strategy

It's a shame they didn't just copy and paste this TCG fighting system for their mobile game, which should have been the bare minimum.

Had 1 as a kid and never understood it, but I played it recently and it's great. A bit rocky at the start since you need to grind a little for Bill and Professor Oak, but it's great.
Don't like the sequel very much. The gimmick fights have me spending more time in the deck editor between every match, and the forced linearity of GR Island just sucks. 1 let me do almost any club in any order, but 2 forces me through a linear path of clubs.
Psychich is bullshit to fight, though. Usually no weaknesses, and constant coinflips. I started keeping track of coinflips in 2, and the game is heavily weighted. Your actual odds of heads is about 1/3 while the computer is about a 3/4 chance.

they're all pretty decent, but they're all fairly grindy. There's a decent amount of upside though and you don't need to beat them to enjoy them.
If you want to play the WCS series and actually beat those games, please don't make the same mistake I did and play them on emulator. It took me around 100+ hours to go through every CPU and their pack unlocks on WCS 2008, and that was before getting to the postgame. Even on fast with no animations and while trying to rush through filler battles, having to beat every CPU 5 times each and then having to beat every cup took forever.
I guess it's fine if you're not a completionist, but for me that's a core part of playing solo TCG, being able to complete sets of cards that I'd never be able to do irl
I've heard some say that the storymode of WCS 2011 makes it especially worth playing but I can't speak on that yet, so ymmv

unironically the closest thing I've ever seen to this is the second act of Inscryption, and that's a big part of why I liked it despite everyone else hating it
really the best you're gonna get is something like duelists of the roses, it doesn't play anything like yugioh (arguably that's to its benefit) but it's the only game I can think of that's a deckbuilder and does something interesting with the concept. unless you count the 40 trillion "deckbuilding rougelikes" that litter steam.

The Tag Force series. You can't tell me the first 3 weren't a direct sequel to the Pokemon TCG on the gameboy. Its basically pokemon tgc island setting and a with MC in red clothes but with extra content like more duelist npc's, npcs having up to 4-8 different decks, a time of day and day of the week, npcs changing locations depending on time of day.

Why wouldn't they buy a shitton of these games if they kept redoing them? I remember duels of the planeswalkers was relatively successful and sold many copies. I know I'm not the only player out there who checked out of the scene after they dropped those games. It was a way to sit down and play magic and not be instantly stomped by whales since everyone had access to the same cards. I miss that series like you wouldn't believe.
Also, I think they're priming us for something related to this. Maybe a new game. I just saw a youtube vid recommended to me talking about this game and now I see a thread. Could a remake be in the works?

Because Pokemon cards are actually a scalpers black market and have been since the late 00's, much like CS2 skins. They don't want kids getting an easy or cheap fix on their pokemon cards by playing a video game. They want kids fist-fighting grown-ass adults who buy entire shelves of Pokemon cards at a time.

I think it was more that these games would quickly fall behind the real TCG's release pace, so they had diminishing appeal and publishers didn't see them as worth the dev cost. Like Pokemon TCG 2 never got an official English release, and it was already 2 or 3 expansions behind at the time of the Japanese release.
Nowadays these games have online clients that can receive updates, but for the most part they're still not seeing single player RPG campaigns as viable investments.

The OG on the NGCP is one of the best card games out there, the gameplay is the smoothest shit ever and the story line is just a kid fucking around arcades and amusement parks trading cards without a worry in the world but to become the best card player ever.
The sequel added "Reaction" cards (work like trap cards but you activate them from your hand) which is a welcome addition but now the game has a story which gets in the way of the game specially went the characters won't stop talking.
