Why is romance in vidya so cringe? Manga is maybe 80% cringe. Movies about 50/50. But in vidya it's like 95% cringe. Saints Row 4 kind of made fun of this by making it so blatantly stupid, but games that make a "serious thing" out of it like Baldur's Gate or every single VN male it so obviously evident that the author is virgin, it's so fucking cringe!

Are there unironically any (good) video games where romance is a crucial part of the plot and character arcs, and not just some optional side-content that has no effect on the story?

The closest I can think of is Mass Effect (where the events of Lair of the Shadow Broker pretty much only make sense if Liara is in love with Shepard) and Danganronpa of all things.

Depends on what you mean by romance, it's only really done well in books and that's rare. You cite mass effect but that's literally 3 conversations a hookup ensues.
Your best hope is from a visual novel, and I couldn't even tell you where to begin because the vast majority with romance are poorly written wish fulfillment.

I finished the trilogy for the first time in 10 years about a month ago. It's true that in the original Mass Effect (the actual initial 'falling in love') it's really not good. I think Liara basically starts telling Shepard how amazing he is in literally the very first private conversation on the Normandy.

But Lair of the Shadow Broker was fantastic. It did such a good job depicting Liara's grief and denial of her feelings knowing that one way or another Shepard is going to die while she's young, and at the climax accepting her emotions.
