lots of people dont get it and think that employers are gouging their poor wagie slaves and they must "pay a living wage!" but look up any discussion about this topic and the wagies themselves are the ones defending tipping and even bragging about how on busy days like friday nights they earn 1k-3k or so on tips and even complaining that on some restaurants they worked on that don't allow tipping and they get paid a fixed rate they say it's less than what they get compared to the usual job below minimum wage but with tips.

yeah, i think it's also important to note that if a waitress works her whole 2 week schedule and doesn't make the equivalent of minimum wage for the hours the did work they automatically get paid minimum wage
so say a waitress who makes 2 dollars works 5 hours, minimum wage is 15
