When an RPG implements a minor character as a full party member, do you bother to try and use them or do you just abandon them from the get go? I remember in one RPG I played ages ago it was like some rpg maker game so idk the name but it had a horror theme to it but still had battles. Anyways they gave you a party member very late into the game by the time you had a full party and you HAD to swap out another person in your party to accept them. So you do that and then later you find out the person you swapped them out with got killed and the game gets angry at you like it's your fault. But you made me switch it out. It was a bullshit moment then and it's a moment now.

Personally I find such implementations of poor rpg characters to be a sign of an uneducated game designer. A character in an rpg should be a very important tool in delivering narrative of the world around the player. If the player cannot talk and grow fond of the NPC, then the character has failed

one time a i got a new party member in the final fucking dungeon. You know what I did? Put her in my party and took her to the final boss. I literally don't give a fuck. I'll just deliberately make shit harder for myself for no fucking reasons. She was a fucking weakling but I still one. that's the role I play. Fucking Winner. I do whatever I want and I still win.

Your problem was engaging with a series where all characters are garbage by default.

Wasn't Towa a party member for like one area in Trails of Cold Steel 2 and then never again
Anyway I'm the kind of person who will doggedly stick with the same party if you let me. I actually kind of appreciate being forced to use different parties by the game, but I'm not going to gimp myself voluntarily

The Original Fire Emblem games made it work going so far as to turn the original character Gotoh into a series spanning archetype, but that's because of their permadeath nature leading to needing an out for a player who struggled their way to the final stage with no real way of being the final boss.

FF3 suffers for being the first game in the series with the swapable job system. Because of this Jobs are less of fully fleshed out options and more like puzzle pieces your meant to swap to for certain dungeons and bosses like the dark knight job existing for a single dungeon. So getting the final Jobs in the final dungeon is meant to be the indented Endgame Roles.
It took till FF5 for them to get it right
