Your whole purpose is to tard wrangle the quirky cast so you "just doing his work" includes interacting with them.
So far you've been forced to choose between certain characters multiple times, though I know there's an achievement specifically for not choosing a waifu which should be a choice later on.

The dispatching minigame is actually fun and it's a shame there isn't more of it. It does make me wish the game was something akin to Evil Genius rather than a Telltale-style storygame.
