It's from a time when BioWare was going through their edgy teen phase. Where they listened to Marilyn Manson and said fuck and stayed out late, because fuck you dad I do what I want! In actuality it was when BioWare still had moderately decent writers and didn't inject the gay race communism they're infested with now into everything. You could have legitimately evil characters and actions that could actually affect your playthrough and reasonably understandable justifications if you did it. Like siding with the forest spirit and her conclave of furries against a racist elf who started the werewolf curse because of a crime that happened centuries ago. Or assisting some crazy dwarven bitch restart the Golem factory which in turn gets used on political prisoners and the poor to keep the dwarven hold safe...and to expand into the underway.

It was when BioWare still had balls to be edgy and do it well.

Great game, but a few mods really elevate it.
The biggest game changer that doesn't mess with the difficulty or content too much is the Advanced Tactics and 40 Tactics slots mods.
The base system is garbage, and it is retarded they would lock companion AI behind exp progression. You can also trigger it on yourself while you are in control to execute the decision tree. Absolutely changes combat from a tedious kotor like experience into a peudo tactical strategy game (as it should be)
