I am almost sure E33 has a GOTY in the bag, if only because Geoff knows E33 fans will eat him alive if it doesn't get a GOTY.
Also, outside of being a critical darling, it's also the only game in the GOTY roster that isn't a sequel of some sort, but a brand new IP. And it had gotten this mainstream appeal of "if you want to talk about games as art, this is the game to point towards". FFS, I saw E33 being discussed in academic discourses already. And we all know how insecure the gaming industry is about being percieved as "true art".

The easiest example is with the compass system, is a way of the game to give the player more responsibility when it comes to the way they play, nothing in that game is free, if you win is because you deserve it.
